Tao is predominantly agricultural. At the same time, its volcanic landscape, paths and historic buildings shape the character of the town. If you are considering a trip to Tao, you can assess the destination through different points of interest: sweeping views, hikes, local history and agriculture. Deciding which of these you want to focus on can help you determine whether Tao is a potential destination for you.

Views and volcanic landscape

On clear days, Tao offers panoramic views of Nazaret, Las Laderas, TahĂche and Teguise. La Graciosa lies in the background, and the view also extends to Risco de Famara. Visibility is therefore limited to clear days and depends on the weather.

The triple eruption of 1824 led to the formation of Volcán de Tao. Geological features include the Peñas de Tao, with numerous boulders reaching heights of more than 30 metres. Their primary interest is volcanic, and their secondary interest is geomorphological; they also have significant landscape value. The slopes of Volcán de Tamia also have a seasonal feature: they are covered with small flowers endemic to the island, especially in winter.

Hiking and choosing trails

There are several described options for hiking. Jable de Tao has marked trails that are easy to walk or cycle. Before setting out, check both the trail markings and the condition of the paths.

A linear hiking route starts in Tao and goes as far as Mancha Blanca. A 2026 hiking programme describes its course through Tiagua, La Vegueta, Liria and Tinache to the destination. The route passes through varied landscapes and several villages. Before your hike, check whether the route is currently accessible and what trail conditions apply.

The trail descriptions provide different planning details: Jable de Tao has marked paths for hiking and cycling, while the route to Mancha Blanca has a set starting point and destination, as well as a described sequence of places along the way. This can help you decide whether you prefer to choose a path in Jable or follow a linear route with named intermediate stops.

Buildings and cultural traditions

The Ermita de Tao is located on Plaza de Tao in Tao/Teguise and is listed as Grade 1 protected historic and artistic heritage. The Iglesia de San Andrés in Tao was built in the early 17th century. Notable features include its altarpiece and religious imagery; its roof structure is in the Mudéjar style. The town's history thus encompasses both a protected hermitage and a church with specifically identified architectural and decorative features.

Tao also has a strong tradition of Canarian wrestling, an indigenous sport. The Fiestas de San Miguel in Tao are local celebrations in honour of Saint Michael. If you would like to include a particular festival in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant period.

Jable's agricultural history

For many years, Jable de Tao provided the people of Tao with food and prosperity. Traditionally, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and pulses such as lentils were grown there. This historical use adds a specific perspective on food and livelihoods to Tao's predominantly agricultural character: these crops illustrate the role Jable played in the town.
