Teguise – Culture, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Teguise
If you prioritize architectural and cultural history when choosing a destination, Teguise offers several specific points of interest: the cobbled streets of the historic center, religious and secular buildings, theater history, and the timple. The Sunday Mercadillo adds a recurring market day to this picture. You can plan your stay around whether architecture, cultural collections, or the market scene is your main interest.
The Historic Center and Its Architecture
The Real Villa de Teguise has been designated a historic-artistic architectural ensemble. Its appearance has changed little since the 19th century. A walk through the cobbled streets of the historic center is a visitor activity that reveals the town’s architectural history through its streetscape. The historic buildings serve different purposes and date from different periods: churches, a theater, and former residences each make their own impression.
Churches and Architectural History
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was founded in the first half of the 16th century. It is considered the most important church on Lanzarote; its tower is the highest architectural feature in Teguise. Several construction phases can be distinguished at the Santo Domingo monastery church: it was founded and built at the beginning of the 18th century, after a church had already been erected on this site in the 17th century. The monastery church has been converted into an exhibition hall; access to exhibitions may vary.
The former Franciscan church also tells a story of changing use: it was converted into a museum of sacred art. Together, the former Franciscan church and the former Dominican monastery church preserve the most important collection of Mudéjar roof structures on Lanzarote. These roof structures offer a distinctive way to explore the island’s religious architecture.
Theater and Mansions
The Teatro Municipal was converted into a venue for dramatic arts in 1825 and is now the oldest surviving theater in the province of Las Palmas. It stands on the site of the former Chapel of the Holy Spirit, founded in 1730. The history of theater and the site’s former religious use meet here, without the current function replacing the building’s earlier history.
Casa de Torres was built in the 18th century as a typical urban mansion on Lanzarote. The Casa Museo MarquĂ©s de Herreras y Rojas offers another example of historic residential architecture: the building extends over two levels and has a central courtyard with a gallery of balconies. Its history also includes a change of ownership. It first belonged to the Dominican Order and was later sold to the SpĂnola family.
The Timple, the Castle, and Local History
The Casa Museo El Timple is dedicated to one of the Canary Islands’ most representative musical instruments and brings together a museum, research center, and cultural space. Its main attraction is an extensive timple collection. Visitors can also observe the various stages of the instrument’s manufacture. In this way, exploring the timple involves not only its exhibits but also the process of making it.
The Castillo de Santa Bárbara was built in the first half of the 16th century on the Guanapay caldera. It is the oldest surviving military building on Lanzarote. Another trace of local history leads to Callejón de la Sangre: the passage carried water that flowed through the Barranco de Miraflores to the Mareta. Its present-day name dates back to the repelled North African raid by Calafat in September 1569. The watercourse and the story behind its name give this place two distinct historical associations.
The Sunday Mercadillo
The traditional Mercadillo Dominical de la Villa de Teguise takes place every Sunday in the historic center. The Mercadillo de La Villa de Teguise has more than 400 stalls; this number may change over time. If the market is important to your travel plans, check the date in advance. Sunday therefore offers a specific point of reference, while churches, theaters, mansions, and collections provide further ways to understand the destination.
