El Cuchillo: Volcanic Landscape, Trails and Local Life
Accommodation in El Cuchillo
If you want to explore volcanic landforms, hiking trails or local culture on a trip to El Cuchillo, there are several specific themes to consider when planning. These include the El Cuchillo-Mosta-Montaña Cavera Geosite, the Los Risquetes trail, the Pilar festival and insights into cheese-making. A protected area and archaeological finds also shape the interests associated with the village.
Volcanic landscape and protected area
The LZ10 El Cuchillo-Mosta-Montaña Cavera Geosite is the area with the highest concentration of cones of Surtseyan origin in the Canary Islands. Here you can trace the full transition between the eruptive phases: initial hydromagmatic phases, in which water and magma interacted, were followed by purely magmatic phases after the water had disappeared from the system. Observable structures include cross-bedding, slumps, channels, dunes and antidunes, as well as impact bombs and impact marks.
Malpaís del Cuchillo is designated as Special Area of Conservation ES7010065 (ZEC). The area is almost entirely covered by ahulaga vegetation (Chenoleoideo tomentosae-Salsoletum vermiculatae, a variant with Launaea arborescens); cultivated land lies along its edges. The presence of Caralluma burchardii was used as the basis for its designation. The reptile Gallotia atlantica has also been recorded in the ZEC area. Around El Cuchillo there are several volcanic vents and lava tubes that are reminders of eruptions in this area.
Agriculture is also connected to the volcanic landscape: the barely visible crater of the Caldera de El Cuchillo has been converted into several arenado cultivation plots. From Filo del Cuchillo, you can see the landscape of El Jable. These different landscape features give you several specific points of interest if you are particularly interested in geology or agriculture.
Los Risquetes hiking trail
The Los Risquetes hiking trail is easy and suitable for everyone. It follows the paved road connecting El Cuchillo and Soo. Check the route before setting out. This will help you keep track of the actual route rather than planning solely based on its difficulty level.
Festivals and local history
The Ermita del Pilar in El Cuchillo is the most important place of worship dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar in Lanzarote. The Pilar festival takes place on 12 October and includes a holy mass and a procession carrying the image through El Cuchillo. The celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora de El Pilar also include open-air dances, competitions, board-game championships, fun runs and children's games. The specific programme may vary from one edition to another.
There is also a race on the calendar for 2026: the Trail Caldera El Cuchillo is part of the Tinajo Cup of popular races. The 10 km race takes place on 9 October and is organised by Club Azarug. The date is different from the festival celebrated on 12 October, so each offers a separate opportunity to experience local life.
El Cuchillo is also a catalogued archaeological site associated with the Majos, the island's ancient inhabitants. Above-ground remains of human settlements, such as pottery fragments and materials used in daily life, can be found in the area. Alongside its geological formations, human traces are therefore a focus of local interest.
Cheese, local products and getting around
The Filo El Cuchillo shop sells cheese, wine, rosquillas and mojos. These products can be sampled at the viewpoint overlooking the coast in northern Tinajo. At the Filo El Cuchillo farm, visitors can see the livestock grazing freely in the early morning after milking and watch the milk curdle in the cheese-making room's vat. Check current access and opening arrangements before visiting.
For travel to the area, a municipal mobility plan from 2019 lists one bus stop and three interurban bus routes in El Cuchillo. Check current routes and services before travelling. This will help you plan your journey using today's connections, while the other themes of your trip—volcanic landscape, hiking trail, festival or cheese-making—can guide your choice of destination.
