Beranga: Historic Buildings, Hiking Trails and Festivals
Accommodation in Beranga
Those planning a trip around architectural history or a specific route will find a range of points of interest in Beranga. The historic buildings reflect several construction periods, while the hiking trails can be distinguished by their destinations and connections. For your planning, both the construction dates and the named waypoints are therefore useful.
Historic Buildings and Art in Beranga
The Torre de los Isla is a dressed-stone tower from the 17th century and bears the Isla family coat of arms. The Casa de los Corro in Beranga is listed as a cultural asset in the General Inventory of the Cultural Heritage of Cantabria. This presents a specific architectural feature and official heritage status as two distinct ways of exploring the town’s history.
The Iglesia de San Cipriano has a Mannerist portal from the 17th century and houses a pre-Churrigueresque Baroque altarpiece by Juan de la Puente Mazateve. Several documents give 1626 as the year it was completed. The portal, altarpiece and completion date thus offer different insights into the church’s architectural and artistic history.
The Casa de los Villa was built in 1540 on land belonging to Lucas de Villa and rebuilt in the 17th century. The Palacio de Villa was built in 1671 over the remains of an earlier tower. The information distinguishes the rebuilding of the Casa from the construction of the Palacio over older remains.
Hiking Trails and Their Destinations
The hiking trail from Berezales ends at the bridge over the Campiezo River and connects to the “Beranga-Hazas” pedestrian promenade. A short hiking trail runs from Beranga parallel to the Campiezo, passes under the A-8 motorway bridge and leads to the “Beranga-Hazas” promenade. Their routes differ in their landmarks: the river bridge is the endpoint of the trail from Berezales, while the shorter trail passes under the motorway bridge.
A footpath about 1,400 metres long connects Beranga with Praves and was inaugurated in October 2024. A route begins in Somavilla, in Beranga, and branches into three hiking trails. Another hiking trail connects the Beranga neighbourhood with the end of Alto de la Vela. One route can be continued via a turn-off to the Church of Santiago ApĂłstol de Praves on the Camino de Santiago. The trails described thus differ in, among other things, their connection to Praves, their branches or their respective destinations.
If you plan to walk one of the routes, check the trail conditions and signage before setting out. Conditions and signage may change.
Festivals and Travel Planning
The San Cipriano festival includes a procession with dancers, a RomerĂa and an evening event. The programme may vary; check the dates and schedule before your trip. San Ciprianuco is associated with a livestock market, a communal meal, horse-pulling events and a RomerĂa. Individual editions may be changed or cancelled.
Arriving by Train
