Cabuérniga: Historic Places and Landscapes
Accommodation in Cabuérniga
Cabuérniga lies in Cantabria, in the middle valley of the Río Saja and in the heart of the Saja-Besaya Natural Park. The municipality brings together historic buildings and a traditional cultural landscape with a marked route through the meadows. When planning your stay, you can therefore focus on different aspects: the buildings and their history in Valle, the landscape along the Ruta de las Mieses, or the dates of the events celebrated there.
Valle and its cultural landscape
Valle has been protected as a Historic Ensemble since 2004. This traditional landscape includes houses and gardens in the local districts, meadows divided by dry-stone walls, pastures, and native woodlands. The architectural and agricultural features stand side by side: the dry-stone walls divide the land, while houses and gardens provide the built framework for the settlements. Near Valle, the alluvial valley plain widens considerably. This offers a distinct point of reference in the landscape, alongside Cabuérniga’s location in the Río Saja valley.
For trip planning, this connection brings the area’s distinctive character to life without limiting a visit to a single building. Valle can be understood both as a historic place and as part of a landscape shaped over time. If you are especially interested in architecture, the individual houses, the church, and the town hall building offer different architectural points of interest; the landscape adds meadows, pastures, and woodlands to this view.
Buildings from different centuries
An inscription on the Casa en El Ricote dates the house to the 18th century. The Iglesia de San Pedro is another prominent landmark: it stands on a small rise and overlooks the village of Valle. Its architectural features include Baroque altarpieces from the 18th century. An altarpiece is the structure behind an altar. The Ayuntamiento–Antigua Cárcel building still preserves prison cells from the 16th century.
The Casa de Don Augusto González Linares also combines architecture and memory. Its floor plan and structure recall medieval defensive towers. A plaque commemorates a meeting there in 1875 between Augusto González Linares, Francisco Giner de los Ríos, Manuel Ruíz de Quevedo, and Nicolás Salmerón. The four are regarded as founders of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza. This house thus brings together an architectural reference and a specific historical event.
Other houses reveal different architectural forms and historical layers. The Casa del Castellano consists of two houses; one has a round arch that belongs to a former single-storey house from the 16th century. The Hilera de La Fonda comprises three houses of different ages and styles. Together, they illustrate the development of the typical Montañés house from the 16th century to the present day. An original carving with castanet motifs has been preserved on the solana of the Casona de los Torales.
The state of preservation is also relevant to understanding the Casona de Rubín de Celis: despite its poor condition, it is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque manor houses in Cabuérniga. The houses described here therefore differ not only in age or design, but also in what they preserve: an inscription, a round arch, a carving, or a distinctive floor plan.
The Ruta de las Mieses and getting your bearings
The linear Ruta de las Mieses is 3.8 kilometres long and runs from Sopeña to Renedo through the meadows of Valle, Terán, and Selores. Along the way, you can see grazing livestock and the various historic ensembles; the route is marked along its entire length. Its distance and stated endpoints provide practical guidance for planning your day. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
For further geographical orientation, the CA-182 road runs from Valle over the Collada de Carmona into the Nansa valley. This is a different kind of reference point from the Ruta de las Mieses: the route is described by its length, endpoints, and the meadows it crosses, while the road locates Valle on the route over the Collada towards the Nansa valley. If you plan to use this road connection, check current road conditions before setting off.
Events in October
La Campaná is celebrated in Valle on the second Sunday in October. The event accompanies the movement of livestock from the mountain pastures at the end of summer. The Feria de Valle takes place in Valle de Cabuérniga on 22 October and features cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. The two events therefore differ both in date and in occasion. If you are planning your trip around one of the events, check the date before you leave.
To decide what to focus on during your trip, you can compare the historic houses and cultural landscape in Valle, the 3.8-kilometre route, or an event date. This lets you tailor your stay to what interests you most, without confusing the different options.
