Discover Somahoz: Route, Waterfalls and La Magosta
Accommodation in Somahoz
Somahoz combines a named circular route with scenic landscapes and archaeological history at Cueto Moroso. It also offers the waterside Sendero Fluvial de la Canal de las Tejeras and La Magosta, a festival held in Somahoz. This gives you two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: a hike with clearly named waypoints and a local tradition centered on tasting chestnuts.
Hiking via Campo de la Cruz and Cueto Moroso
The route runs from Somahoz via Campo de la Cruz and Cueto Moroso and back to Somahoz. The 2018 route guide estimates its length at 13.1 kilometers. The starting point and return point are therefore the same; Campo de la Cruz and Cueto Moroso are two points along the route. It can be considered a circular route, not a trail with a separate destination.
The start of the Canal de las Tejeras section is two kilometers from Somahoz along the route. The Sendero Fluvial de la Canal de las Tejeras follows the watercourse. The main route reaches the start of this trail. Within the municipality of Los Corrales de Buelna, the Canal de las Tejeras is designated Route LCB-7.
The described route also passes through a forest of native oaks, beeches, hazels and holly trees, as well as a few chestnut trees. Together with the watercourse and waterfalls, this gives the route a variety of landscapes. The composition of the forest may change over time.
Hillfort and views at Cueto Moroso
A Cantabrian hillfort once stood at the summit of Cueto Moroso. A large collapse in the fortification wall is visible in the area of the site; in places, the wall still stands at its original height. There is also a paved zigzag path and possible stone mounds. The hillfort thus connects the hiking route with the archaeological traces at the summit. A zigzag path can be understood as a path with repeated changes of direction; here, it is described as paved.
The views also differ depending on the direction. To the west, the view extends across the Valle de Cieza, with the Sierras del Cordel and Peña Sagra beyond, and the Picos de Europa in the background. To the south, the view opens onto the Valle de Iguña. The summit of Ureño is in the middle, with Jano to the right. The western and southern views therefore look out over different valleys and named summits.
La Magosta in Somahoz
La Magosta is an established tradition in Somahoz and is one of the most popular festivals in the area. Chestnuts are tasted at the festival. Alongside hiking, this local event is a highlight, distinguished by its connection to chestnuts from the landscapes and historical themes at Cueto Moroso. If you would like to plan your trip around La Magosta, check the specific festival dates in advance; program details may also vary.
