Lavín offers nature attractions and hiking trails in the Valle de Soba, as well as a longstanding tradition in the surrounding area. The Collados del Asón Nature Park Interpretation Centre is located in Barrio Lavín in La Gándara de Soba, next to the Monte Lavín recreation area. If you’re planning your stay around the landscape and trails, you’ll find a range of options here: a nature park centre, several routes and the region’s Marzas tradition.

Nature Park Centre and Protected Area

At the centre, you can get visitor information and take guided or self-guided tours. An audiovisual presentation lasts about 20 minutes. This approximate duration gives you a specific time slot to factor into your day’s plans. The information panels cover geomorphology, vegetation, fauna and rural life in the Valle de Soba. The exhibition also explores Quaternary glaciation and the underground world. Geomorphology refers to the forms and development of the landscape; this aspect complements the focus on plants and animals by showing how the terrain is shaped.

Collados del Asón Nature Park is a protected natural area in Cantabria. Its 4,020 hectares lie entirely within the municipality of Soba. This helps distinguish the centre’s specific location in Lavín from the larger protected area within the municipality.

Hiking Trails along the Río Gándara

The “Recorriendo el Valle de Soba” route descends about 1.5 kilometres from the Interpretation Centre to the village of Lavín. The starting point, direction and approximate distance are clear: the route leads downhill from the centre to the village.

The guided Naturea Monte la Vega route is a 10-kilometre circular walk with 200 metres of elevation gain and a moderate difficulty level. It reaches Lavín after passing a small grove of Cantabrian holm oaks (Quercus ilex). It also follows the Río Gándara along old roads, paths and tracks that once connected villages in the Valle de Soba. The route links the landscape with the former use of these paths between villages.

On another route, after passing through Lavín, you cross the Río Gándara over an iron bridge; the trail then leads into a wooded area. A path along the Río Gándara also offers views of several large river basins. The river is therefore both a crossing point on the way into the woods and a landscape featuring broad basins.

Landscape and Tradition in the Surrounding Area

The Cagigal forest on Monte Lavín in La Gándara has been preserved and restored as a recreational area. This means that, alongside the nature park and trails, a specifically named woodland is also part of the landscape around Lavín.

In the wider area around Lavín, men of all ages and children still sing the Marzas, a longstanding festival. The tradition brings a cultural dimension of the Valle de Soba into view, complementing the natural and trail-related aspects of a stay. It is rooted in the wider area around Lavín and kept alive not only by the landscape but also by the people of the region.
