If you are considering Liencres as a destination for your stay, its coastline is shaped by wave action. Wave action has created abrupt, deeply incised formations here. Holocene dunes lie along the sandy beach; a significant stand of beach pines stabilises the mobile dunes shaped by the wind.

Dune Landscape and Protected Area

The Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres was designated in 1986. The Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres y Costa Quebrada includes the mouth of the Río Pas and continues beyond the estuary along the beaches of Valdearenas and Canallave. Part of the park includes the Costa Quebrada UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2025.

You can experience the dunes and coastal area at several named beaches. Valdearenas is located in the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres and is 2,800 metres long. It is the longest and widest of the municipal beaches of Piélagos. Take care when swimming on the open sea coast because of strong currents and whirlpools; conditions are affected by the weather and sea state.

Beaches with Different Features

Canallave is a windy, open-sea beach with strong currents and is often used by surfers. A rocky headland called Peñuescas separates it from Valdearenas. Somocuevas, in turn, is a nudist beach with few visitors, sheltered by a rocky headland. The beach has no facilities. If facilities are important for your visit, check local information in advance.

Arnía also offers a different view of the coast: this small cove lies between rocky cliffs and is of considerable geological interest. Highly fossiliferous marls or marly limestones are visible on the beach. From Arnía, the exceptional view extends across the wave-cut platform from Soto de la Marina to the Liencres dune field.

Routes and Getting There

The Parque Natural Dunas de Liencres route takes three and a half hours and starts at the park's upper car park. The Costa Quebrada 1 route starts at the car park at Canallave Beach. You can also reach the Liencres dunes via a six-kilometre detour on the CA-305 from the CA-231. As local access conditions and road conditions may change, check them before setting out.

Architecture and Surf Lessons

The Iglesia de Santa Eulalia offers a change of pace from the coast and geology. It has a rectangular floor plan with three naves and a gabled roof; its tower was completed in 1706. The Molino de Mareas, a tide mill, is also located in Cala de Liencres.

Those interested in surfing can find beginner lessons, skills-improvement lessons and competition-level courses at the Escuela de surf Liencres. Course availability may change; check the current offering in advance. This lets you consider coastal scenery, routes, architecture and surf lessons as different priorities when planning your trip.
