Mazandrero: Manor Houses, Megaliths and Trails
Accommodation in Mazandrero
Mazandrero lies on a hilltop, with panoramic views of La Joyanca. The village is characterised by numerous Baroque manor houses; oak, beech and birch forests, along with distinctive riverside vegetation, also shape its character. Cultural history and landscape sit side by side here, from historic buildings to trails leading towards the wooded slopes.
Manor Houses and Architectural History
The Casona de los Martínez is a manor house dating from the 17th century. The Palacio de los Obeso, on Plaza de los Leones, represents a different era: it was built in the early 20th century in the regionalist Montañés style. Mazandrero’s historic centre preserves numerous Baroque manor houses. The buildings thus reflect different periods of local architectural history rather than forming a single, uniform streetscape.
The Church of San Lorenzo also dates from the 17th century. Its simple bell tower stands beside a round-arched portal with coffered archivolts. Its furnishings include the main altarpiece from the late 17th century, a work by the artist Juan de la Peña, who came from Trasmiera. The side altarpieces were made in the 18th century and show the work of the Campurrian draughtsman Manuel García Bayllo. The church therefore offers a chance to see architectural features and furnishings from different periods.
Another landmark on Plaza de los Leones is the Fuente de Los Leones, which dates back to 1911. A report from 2020 described its restoration and stated that its original architecture and materials had been fully preserved. Together with the manor houses and San Lorenzo, it forms part of a walking route through different aspects of Mazandrero’s architectural heritage, although the individual buildings do not all belong to the same period.
Los Lagos and Megalithic Heritage
The megalithic monuments of Los Lagos are located in Mazandrero. The complex consists of three megalithic burial chambers: Los Lagos I, Los Lagos II and Los Lagos III. Their names distinguish the three chambers and give the archaeological ensemble a clear structure. The Los Lagos area is also home to the Menhir Los Lagos B, an object of material cultural heritage. Menhir Los Lagos A was erected in the late 1990s as part of archaeological interventions. For visitors interested in history, this megalithic heritage broadens the picture beyond the manor houses and church furnishings.
Forests, Elevation and Views
The hilltops and forested areas form another part of the village’s character. Well-preserved woodland includes oak, beech and birch trees, alongside distinctive riverside vegetation. Mazandrero offers panoramic views of La Joyanca. These landscape features are distinct from the specific buildings and archaeological sites in the village and provide a separate focus for planning a trip.
Trails and Tour Planning
For cycling, the Mazandrero–Gulatrapa–Los Lagos mountain biking route is a named option. It includes a 12-kilometre climb and partly crosses the Alto Híjar forest areas. Check the route conditions before cycling.
A track leads from Plaza de la Fuente towards Gulatrapa and Los Lagos through the wooded, shaded slopes of Monte Milagro. A second track climbs from there southwards to the Camino de la Guerra. The routes differ: one leads to the two named destinations through wooded slopes, while the other climbs south towards the Camino de la Guerra. From there, you can see clear remains of former glaciers in the Cuenca Bucer and Cuenca Vitores valleys.
A report dated 24 August 2026 announced repairs to a section of the rural road between Mazandrero and Los Lagos. The section is 455 metres long and 3.5 metres wide; the stated investment was 39,983 euros. Check the current condition of the road before setting out. This lets you consider Mazandrero’s historic sites, views and different routes separately when choosing what interests you about your trip.
