Accommodation in Penagos
For a trip to Penagos, you can choose from several themes: sacred architecture and art, the Palacio de Miranda, Puente de Búmbaro, and the karst landscape of Cabárceno, as well as routes for different activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Penagos, these highlights can help you plan your trip around your interests. Churches and buildings span several historical periods, while the Vía Verde del Pas offers different ways to get around.
Churches, Art and Architectural History
The Iglesia de San Jorge is considered Penagos’s most highly regarded monument. The present-day church was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Construction of the church building is dated to 1585–1589, while work on the tower is dated to 1655. The church and tower therefore belong to distinct building phases, clearly separated in time.
During restoration of the main altarpiece in 1995, a painting was discovered behind the altar niche, on six walnut panels joined together. It depicts Saint George in armour on a white horse, slaying a dragon. A princess watches the scene from in front of a castle that protects a town. The work therefore depicts not only the battle of Saint George: the princess and the town protected by the castle are also part of the scene.
The Ermita de Santa Eulalia is a simple religious building dating from the 17th century; records of it go back to the early Middle Ages. Its construction date and the earliest records therefore belong to different periods. The Palacio de Miranda complements the religious buildings with a historical link to local government: it was the seat of a former local council. It comprises a house dating from before 1682 and a tower dating from before 1739. These dates distinguish the two parts of the building rather than assigning a single construction year to the palace.
Puente de Búmbaro is a medieval bridge dating from the 16th century that crosses the River Pisueña. Its three semicircular arches are a distinctive architectural feature. The heritage of the municipal centre can also be explored in Penagos’s districts on a short walk along the road, with the Palacio de Miranda standing out.
Cabárceno and the Karst Landscape
The karst landscape of Cabárceno was formed by past mining activity and is considered a valuable geological heritage site. Part of the Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno lies within the municipality of Penagos, while the park also extends into other municipalities. Its size and road infrastructure give an idea of the scale of the site: the park covers 750 hectares and has 20 kilometres of roads. Its geographical relationship to Penagos is also important for planning your trip: the park is partly within the municipality, but extends beyond its boundaries.
Vía Verde del Pas: Different Ways to Get Around
The Vía Verde del Pas begins in the Valles Pasiegos region, within the municipality of Penagos. It offers opportunities for walking, cycling, and travelling on inline skates and scooters; the route is also suitable for families with children. The Astillero–Penagos section of the Camino Natural Vía Verde del Pas is suitable for people with reduced mobility. This statement applies to this section; surface conditions may change. Local access conditions for the short walk along the road may also change. Before your visit, check the current conditions for the walk and the surface conditions along the section mentioned.
