When planning a trip to Potes, you can explore nature trails and cultural themes from different perspectives: a hiking route is defined by its distance and duration, the Senda del Río by its location alongside two rivers, and historic buildings tell stories of different eras. This lets you plan your stay around the topics that interest you most.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The Encinares y Praderas de Potes a Armaño route starts in Potes and leads to Armaño. It is 8.8 kilometres long, climbs 255 metres and takes three hours at an easy difficulty level. Along the way, it crosses Monte La Roja, a Mediterranean woodland area with holm oaks, junipers, strawberry trees and cork oaks. The distance, elevation gain and duration give you a clear framework for planning your day on this route.

The Senda del Río starts beside the medieval San Cayetano Bridge in the historic centre and runs along the right bank of the Quiviesa and Deva rivers. The riverside landscape is home to trout and waterbirds; otters are spotted occasionally, but sightings are not guaranteed. Information boards about local fauna and flora add to the route. As they need to be maintained, it is worth checking their condition locally.

At Monte Arabedes, a circular walking route offers another perspective on Potes: it starts near the public school and leads to a wooden viewpoint overlooking the town. The Alcornocal Tolibes y Porcieda Valmayor route, by contrast, starts south of Potes on the N-621 national road. Viorna is listed as being 1,095 metres high; high-mountain conditions can affect trail safety.

Horse-riding trails are also available in Potes and Liébana. The various routes pass through forests and villages, combining nature with culture and tradition. This means you can choose between hiking routes with specific trail details and routes with different landscape and thematic connections when planning your trip.

Near Potes, the Casa de la Naturaleza de Pesaguero provides information about local attractions, as well as guided and self-guided tours in the region. Its interactive exhibits cover the biology and conservation of the brown bear, as well as bear-related festivals.

Architectural History and Culture in Potes

Potes Old Town is protected as a site of special cultural interest. The Ruta de los Escudos offers a walking tour with a particular focus on house facades: it starts at the Centro de Estudios Lebaniegos and leads through the streets of Potes past houses bearing coats of arms. The route also involves finding 24 coats of arms.

Historic buildings include the Torre del Infantado, a 15th-century monument associated with Íñigo López de Mendoza, the Marqués de Santillana, and his descendants from the ducal House of Infantado. The tower also houses a permanent exhibition about the life and work of Beato de Liébana, an 8th-century abbot. Check the exhibition and access arrangements again before your visit.

The medieval Torre de Orejón de la Lama, also known as the Torre de Bedoya, dates from the 15th to 16th centuries and currently hosts exhibitions and events. The former Antigua Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir has a different architectural history: this protected heritage building includes construction phases dating from the 14th to 18th centuries. The Centro de Estudios Lebaniegos is located in the former church.

The Centro de Estudios Lebaniegos hosts temporary exhibitions, concerts, performing arts, literary events and conferences. It also houses a pilgrim support centre and the Potes municipal tourist information office. Programmes and office services may change; check current dates and opening arrangements before visiting.

The Casa de Cultura also offers a changing programme throughout the year, with temporary exhibitions, conferences, talks and courses. A recurring date in the annual calendar is 15 August: a procession from Potes takes place in honour of the Virgen de Valmayor, the patron saint of Potes, followed by a picnic. The existing building dates from the 18th century.
