Accommodation in Socobio
If you are interested in Romanesque architecture and local history, Socobio offers plenty of ways to explore them. The town is home to the Colegiata de Santa Cruz de Castañeda. Its history began in the 9th or 10th century as a Benedictine monastery. In the 12th century, the monastery was transformed into a collegiate church by a community of Augustinian canons. This development from monastic life to a collegiate church provides a historical context for your stay in Socobio.
Romanesque Architectural History
The Colegiata is a Romanesque church and was declared a National Monument on 7 November 1930. Its floor plan is unusual for churches in Castile and Cantabria: it consists of a nave and three apses. A nave is the main space of a church; apses are distinctive enclosed spaces. The entrance is through a monumental portal with seven archivolts, or stepped rings of arches.
The name also points to its religious history: it derives from a relic of the Lignum Crucis that was kept there. It is important to know about access before your visit. The Colegiata is closed to the public except during Sunday religious services; visits can be arranged by appointment in advance. If you are planning a visit, arrange your appointment beforehand and check the current visiting conditions, as access information may change.
Local History and Museum
Casa de los Socobio adds local traditions to the ecclesiastical history. It is considered one of the oldest houses in the valley and the origin of the settlement, as well as the source of the town’s name. It is also connected with Socobio’s historical role as the seat and meeting place of the Juntas Generales. The town’s local history thus brings together the house’s traditions, the origin of its name and its historical role as a meeting place.
The Centro de Interpretación del Románico is located in Socobio, in the former village schools, and serves as a museum. The Oficina de Turismo de Castañeda is also located in the same Centro, in Barrio de Socobio. The museum and tourist office are therefore at the same location: the Centro offers an introduction to Romanesque art, while the Oficina de Turismo is Castañeda’s tourist office.
Festival and Nearby Activities
The Santa Cruz patron saint’s festival is celebrated in Socobio on 3 May. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the programme for the current year in advance.
The section of Cueva de Las Monedas open to visitors is around 160 metres of the cave’s 800-metre length. Its formations include stalactites, stalagmites, discs, columns, hanging terraces and colourful sinter deposits. Check access before visiting.
In the wider region around Socobio, the sections of the Vía Verde del Pas offer opportunities for hiking, cycling, inline skating and scootering.
