Vioño brings together the river landscape of the Río Pas and a varied religious and architectural heritage. The river reaches the town from the south, turns east, and runs alongside the town centre, separating it from Renedo, Quijano, and Barcenilla. Poplars, alders, and willows grow along its banks year-round. Both the river corridor and the different neighbourhoods are therefore part of the destination's character.

Vioño has a polycentric character: its settlement pattern includes small neighbourhoods, traditional terraced houses, and detached manor houses. The town therefore cannot be described by a single building alone. If you choose Vioño for a trip focused on landscape and cultural heritage, you will find several distinct townscapes here.

Getting There and the Townscape

Vioño is accessible from the A-8 (Oviedo–Bilbao) via Exit 225 and the CA-234. The town is about two kilometres from the exit. This provides a brief guide for getting there; check road conditions before your trip.

Sanctuary and Churches

The Santuario de la Virgen de Valencia is located on a hill in the Barrio de Valencia and is protected as a Bien de Interés Local. It is a pilgrimage sanctuary. Its first building dates from 1622. The Virgen de Valencia housed in the Santuario, however, is a Gothic sculpture from the mid-15th century. The dates refer to two different things: the sanctuary's first building and the sculpture.

Vioño's churches also display different architectural features. The Iglesia de San Pedro dates from the 17th to 18th centuries and has a rectangular floor plan with a single nave. The Iglesia de San Vicente is a plain, single-nave church from the 17th century. Its altarpiece draws on pre-Churrigueresque models from the Camargo workshop dating to the final years of the 17th century. The altarpiece's original sculptures have been preserved, except for the figure of Saint Joseph. A visit to the churches offers a chance to consider their furnishings as a distinct part of the cultural heritage, alongside their architectural design.

Interpretation Centre and Visitor Options

The Centro de Interpretación del Valle de Piélagos is housed in Vioño's former first school building, next to the Santuario de la Virgen de Valencia. It offers educational and explanatory guided tours for individuals, associations, groups, and other organisations. Advance registration is required; arrangements may vary. If you plan to visit the Centro, confirm your registration in advance.

The Centro focuses on Piélagos: its subjects include Palaeolithic cave art remains in the municipality, including the Cueva de Santián as a notable example. A stay in Vioño can therefore also offer a connection to a subject that extends beyond the town's history to the wider Piélagos area.

Walking and Different Routes

The municipal La Virgen de Valencia route is a hike of moderate difficulty. It is 6.1 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of two hours. It starts at the Complejo municipal Vimenor and ends at the Iglesia de San Salvador in the Barrio de Salcedo. The route is not a loop and passes a total of ten points of interest. Its length, estimated duration, and endpoint help you assess this hike as a specific commitment in terms of time and distance.

Pasa x Piélagos also describes a route through Vioño that combines nature and history. Its focus is the patron saint of Piélagos, the Virgen de Valencia, known as “La Quemada”. This description has a different focus from the information about the length and duration of the municipal hiking route. Check the practical details before planning to take part.
