El Bonillo: Church Art, Nature and Golf
Accommodation in El Bonillo
El Bonillo brings together sacred architecture and historic landmarks with the natural features of the surrounding area and a golf course. This makes it easy to tailor a stay to different interests: architecture and local history are a focus in the town, while the plains and steppe birds draw attention to the landscape.
Churches, Art and Local History
The Iglesia de Santa Catalina stands in a square in El Bonillo. Its features include a Baroque Churrigueresque altarpiece and a spiral staircase that leads to the tower. The Museo Parroquial del SantĂsimo Cristo de los Milagros is located inside the parish complex. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. Please check with the parish or the CofradĂa del SantĂsimo Cristo de los Milagros in advance.
Another stop on the “Tras las huellas de Vandelvira” cultural route is El Bonillo Town Hall. The 16th-century building features tiers of double arches and clear characteristics of civil architecture inspired by Vandelvira. El Bonillo’s Rollo o Picota is also part of the town’s history: erected in 1538 on Cerro de San Cristóbal, it symbolizes the rights and jurisdiction of the villa to administer justice.
Nature and Landscape Around El Bonillo
The natural surroundings are suitable for leisurely walks and cycling. Up to twelve routes run through the area around El Bonillo and are suitable for all age groups. The open plains provide a habitat for steppe birds; the area around El Bonillo is also included in the European register of Important Bird Areas. If this designation is important to your specific plans, please check the current register. When walking or cycling, you should also take local conditions into account.
El Sabinar lies on the road connecting El Bonillo with Ossa de Montiel and is described as Europe’s southernmost juniper woodland. Alongside the open plains, this gives visitors a named landscape feature and its geographical classification to consider when planning a trip.
Golf and Events
The Campo de Golf La Lagunilla de El Bonillo is a nine-hole golf course with a practice area. The municipality describes it as the only public golf course in Castilla-La Mancha. This allows the golf offering to be considered separately from the town’s cultural and landscape attractions.
El Bonillo’s Semana Santa (Holy Week) is recognized as a festival of regional tourist interest. It features seven brotherhoods: JesĂşs del Huerto, CaĂda de JesĂşs, Nuestro Padre JesĂşs Nazareno, Armaos, San Juan Evangelista y Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, JesĂşs de Medinaceli, and Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. The first six have their own musical bands.
The Feria de Tradiciones y ArtesanĂa Villa de El Bonillo takes place in June, on the weekend closest to the feast day of San Juan. It includes workshops, craft sales, traditional sports, music and folk dances. As the annual program may vary, please check the dates and program for the year of your visit.
Traditional Cuisine
El Bonillo’s traditional cuisine includes ajo mataero, also known as ajopringue, and atascaburras. At past weddings in El Bonillo, traditional dishes were often complemented by migas con chocolate. This historical connection adds a culinary tradition to the town’s history without suggesting that past wedding menus reflect what is offered today.
