Hellín offers several focal points to consider when planning a trip: historic architecture, archaeological and ethnographic collections, the Tamboradas, as well as walking trails and nature watching. The following themes each have their own focus, combining urban culture with aspects of nature and agriculture.

Old Town, Museum and Archaeology

Hellín’s old town preserves architectural features dating from the Middle Ages, particularly from the 12th century onward, through to the present day. This span of time makes the history of its buildings a focus in its own right. The Museo Comarcal de Hellín is also located in the historic centre. Its three floors display archaeological and ethnographic collections; the building itself has eclectic and modernist influences. The collections and architecture thus offer two different perspectives on the museum.

The Convento de los Franciscanos has a Rococo camarín (devotional chamber) with gilded stucco work and polychrome tiles. This extends the architectural range from the old town’s broad historical span to a specific Rococo detail. The Parque Arqueológico del Tolmo de Minateda offers a distinct archaeological focus. Its remains include Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Islamic evidence. Both the museum and the park feature archaeology; the museum also includes ethnographic collections, while the park contains remains from four historical cultures.

Tamboradas and Cultural Tradition

Hellín’s Tamboradas form a different cultural focus. UNESCO has recognised them as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. During the Tamborada, more than 20,000 people drum through the city streets. Unlike the architecture and collections, drumming in the urban space is the defining feature here. If the Tamborada is the reason for your trip, check the event dates in advance.

Walking Trails, Birdwatching and Rice-Growing Landscapes

For walks, the Paseos Saludables programme in Hellín offers three routes of varying length and intensity. One is a circular route of about 6 km around the town centre. It follows broad avenues with wide pavements and is well lit. You can compare the three routes by length and intensity; the circular route also offers specific points of reference: its approximate distance, circular shape, wide pavements and lighting. The approximately 6 km distance gives you an idea of how much time to set aside for this part of your stay.

Large birds can be seen soaring in the Yesares de Hellín. The quiet landscape also makes it easier to observe other birds of open country. The difference from the Paseos Saludables routes lies in the focus: the routes are defined by their length and intensity, while birdwatching is the main attraction in the Yesares. This lets you choose between a specific walking route and an interest in nature.

In Las Minas, a traditional irrigation network of acequias (irrigation channels) makes it possible to grow rice in an area that would otherwise be characterised by esparto grass and olive trees. The protected designation of origin for rice covers the municipalities of Calasparra, Moratalla and Hellín. This agricultural focus complements birdwatching with another perspective on the landscape: the emphasis here is on irrigation and cultivation rather than observing birds.
