When searching for a hotel in Masegoso, your planned time outdoors or your interest in heritage may determine your choice. Highlights range from the protected Laguna del Arquillo and trails for hikers and cyclists to churches and dry-stone structures.

Natural Setting and Laguna del Arquillo

Masegoso lies in a continental climate zone at elevations above 1,000 metres. Holm oak stands, pastureland and river meadows shape the landscape, providing habitats for red deer, foxes and Iberian ibex. Laguna del Arquillo is part of the Natura 2000 network and the network of protected natural areas in Castilla-La Mancha. It is designated as SCI ES4210006 and as the Laguna del Arquillo Natural Monument.

At the more accessible sections of the shore, you can explore parts of the shoreline on walks. There are open caves in the Laguna area, some of which are decorated with rock paintings. This brings together the natural setting and an archaeological site, although a walk along the shore should not be taken to mean that the caves are accessible.

Hiking and Cycling Trails

The Ruta Masegoso circular route passes through Masegoso, the Vega de Masegoso and the Caminos de los Molinos before returning to Masegoso; its stated length and elevation gain are 12 km and 300 m. It was designed specifically for bicycles, but the good trail conditions also make it suitable on foot or in an off-road vehicle. One named section is the Cañada de los Endrinos: it lies between mountains and has a clear spring that attracts local wildlife. Water availability can vary seasonally.

Masegoso offers opportunities for moderate hiking and cycling, with natural connections to the Vía Verde de Alcaraz. From Masegoso, you can follow the well-maintained Vía Verde on foot or by bicycle to Laguna del Arquillo. Another option is the Camino del Arquillo: this easy route is 40 km long and divided into three stages, including the Masegoso–Peñascosa stage. Check trail conditions before setting out; for the Ruta Masegoso, also pay attention to the signage.

Churches and Architecture

The small church of San Antonio in Cilleruelo may have been built before the 11th century and can be classified as Romanesque. Its single-nave layout and plain exterior define the description of the building. The church of San Benito in Masegoso is thought to date from the 16th century; its simple interior also has a single nave. Their differing dates and descriptions make both churches distinct points of interest for travellers interested in regional architectural history.

A distinctive feature of San Benito came to light during roof repairs: a coffered ceiling with geometric, plant-inspired decoration and a pronounced Mudéjar influence. The so-called Cucos are also part of the architectural heritage. These dry-stone structures can be seen in many places across the municipality of Masegoso and are being promoted for their historical interest. UNESCO World Heritage recognition is being considered; this is a proposal under consideration, not an existing UNESCO status.

Getting There and Stargazing

To reach Laguna del Arquillo, travel from Masegoso along the road towards Ituero-Los Chopes, then take a left-turning track at kilometre 14.900. The main route from Albacete follows the N-322 to Alcaraz, then the AB-519 through San Pedro and Casas de Lázaro. Alternatively, the AB5028 road leads from the N-322 to Masegoso, beyond El Jardín. Check local road and track conditions before travelling.

At the entrance to Masegoso, a hill has a viewpoint open to visitors and a Starlight Point. The viewpoint is suitable for stargazing activities and is protected from light pollution. Alongside hiking, cycling and architecture, stargazing is another distinct area of interest.
