Molinicos: Murals, Museums and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Molinicos
Molinicos can be explored through art around the town, culture-focused routes and mountain scenery. The various routes and museums each offer a different focus, ranging from murals and the old town to historic buildings, water and nature.
Murals, the Old Town and a Film Trail
As part of the “Molinicos – Museo a Cielo Abierto” project, the murals form an artistic and tourist trail throughout the town. Another way to discover cultural sites is the “Escenarios de pelĂcula en Molinicos, casco antiguo y museos” route. It connects the old town and museums with Charca de los Molinos, Puente Arco Medieval, the former town hall and the church. The route takes approximately two hours and is suitable for all visitors.
Routes with Different Focuses
The Ruta Atalayas is also listed as taking approximately two hours, but it describes a 6.5-kilometre circular route. It starts near the town centre and, on the return leg, passes through the old town along Calle Molinos. The two routes therefore have similar estimated durations but different descriptions: the film route names the cultural sites it connects, while the Atalayas route also specifies its length and circular layout. The Ruta Atalayas leads to watchtowers built between the 10th and 12th centuries.
The Ruta El Bujero starts in the town centre and ends back in Molinicos after passing through Cortijo de El Retamar. El Bujero is a natural rock fissure at an altitude of around 1,100 metres; from there, you can enjoy views of parts of the municipal areas of Molinicos, Elche de la Sierra and Letur. Knowing where the Ruta El Bujero starts and ends helps with orientation, while the elevation and the views described offer a distinct perspective on the landscape.
Mountain Scenery and Water
The municipality of Molinicos is part of the Parque Natural de los Calares del RĂo Mundo y de la Sima. Nearby, trails pass through pine forests and by waterfalls. Molinicos itself lies between two streams; white houses and rising streets are characteristic features of the town’s typical mountain architecture.
La Charca is a small waterfall formed by Arroyo Morote, with a pool near Puente de los Patos. A Roman aqueduct can also be seen at La Charca; it was later used as an irrigation channel. Water, architecture and landscape come together here, without the route being reduced to a single attraction.
Museums and Local History
The Museo y Ruta de los Oficios de Molinicos is an ethnographic trail exploring traditional ways of life and occupations connected with the land, the mountains and the use of water. The Museo MicolĂłgico “La Casa del NĂscalo” has a different focus: it is dedicated to the world of mushrooms and mycology, and is considered the only museum on this subject in Castilla-La Mancha.
The former town hall, which houses the Casa del NĂscalo, was built shortly after the municipality gained independence in the mid-19th century. Another glimpse into the town’s working history can be found at Molino del Jaro. The machinery of a former grain mill has been preserved there, and the process of grinding wheat into flour is explained.
Planning Guided Tours and Visits
The Molinicos Tourist Office provides visitor services in the town and its surrounding area. It offers guided tours of the filming locations for “Amanece que no es poco” and the La Casa del NĂscalo and Museo y Ruta de los Oficios museums. The former town hall and Casa del NĂscalo can be visited on a free guided tour, with advance booking.
Visits to the Museo y Ruta de los Oficios are available for groups and schools, including secondary schools, on any day of the week with advance booking. Check the booking requirements, confirm the availability of guided tours before travelling, and find out about the Tourist Office’s current opening arrangements.
