When visiting Riópar, architectural and industrial history sit alongside natural attractions and outdoor activities. The historic sites tell different stories; around the town, options range from birdwatching to hiking and cycling routes. This variety gives you several points to consider when planning your stay.

Church, castle and houses in Riópar Viejo

In Riópar Viejo, the Iglesia parroquial del Espíritu Santo dates back to the 15th century. It is considered the oldest church in the Sierra del Segura. The remains of a medieval castle of Islamic origin have also been preserved there. Narrow streets and restored stone houses in traditional architectural styles complete the historic townscape. The church, castle ruins and houses each represent different aspects of architectural history.

Another point of interest for those interested in the night sky is the Mirador Starlight in Riópar Viejo. An information board and a planisphere calendar help visitors identify constellations and other celestial objects. This gives the viewpoint a different focus from the historic buildings: here, attention turns to finding your way around the sky.

Esparto and industrial history

The Museo del Esparto de Riópar displays objects made from esparto grass and other materials, as well as equipment and tools once used in rural life. Workshops on esparto craftsmanship are held there from time to time; dates are announced. Opening hours may vary seasonally, so check the current hours before visiting.

The Reales Fábricas de San Juan de Alcaraz represent another chapter in the town’s history. Their history dates back to 1773; they were the first factory of their kind in Spain and the second in the world. After more than 200 years in operation, they finally closed in 1996. Part of the complex was subsequently converted into a museum of industrial archaeology. This makes it possible to distinguish between the long history of operations, the closure of the factories and their later transformation.

The Caz de las Fábricas, a long aqueduct, is another architectural landmark. It can be reached via a path suitable for everyone and is less than one kilometre from the town centre. Check the trail conditions locally. The aqueduct’s distance from the centre is a different measurement from the length of the trail from Puerto del Arenal to Los Chorros.

Natural attractions and routes around Riópar

The Nacimiento del Río Mundo, also known as Los Chorros, is located in the Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima, less than ten kilometres from Riópar. Water plunges 86 metres from the Cueva de los Chorros. It then flows through clear pools and small cascades known as Las Calderetas.

A signposted four-kilometre trail leads from the Puerto del Arenal car park to Los Chorros. Along the way, it passes through extensive pine forests and by numerous springs and streams. As trail and car park conditions can change, check them locally. The Sendero de las Fábricas de Riópar is rated as easy; the route is suitable for family outings or cycling trips.

The Balsa del Gollizo is a small artificial reservoir of historic and heritage value. It is suitable for observing birds and amphibians. Outdoor activities around Riópar also include hiking, mountain biking, climbing, horseback riding, caving and birdwatching. The nature experience can therefore take many different forms, from watching wildlife at the reservoir to getting active on the surrounding trails.

Environmental education and information workshops, an exhibition and guided routes are held in the Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima. If you plan to take part in these activities, check the dates in advance. Riópar can be reached via the N-322 and CM-412.
