Natural Areas and Trails

Alamillo is part of the Parque Natural del Valle de Alcudia y Sierra Madrona. Mountains, holm oak groves and Mediterranean woodland shape the landscape. The municipality also includes wetlands with small lagoons, the Bonales, the Alcudia River and streams that flow irregularly. These varied landscape features give the area its distinctive character.

Vultures, black storks, Iberian lynxes and Spanish imperial eagles can be found in the municipality. An encounter with these animals is not guaranteed, but the area’s biodiversity is part of its natural character. If you’re looking for a hotel in Alamillo, the natural surroundings and the trails described here can help shape your trip.

Circular Routes, Nature Displays and Historic Trails

The “El Valle y las Hectáreas” hiking route is a circular trail through the municipality of Alamillo. It follows municipal paths throughout and is easy to walk. As seasonal conditions may affect access, check current route conditions and seasonal restrictions before setting out.

Another way to experience nature runs through the town: the Ruta Urbana de la Naturaleza features micro-perforated image panels on building façades. They depict mammals, birds and reptiles that may be found in the Parque Natural del Valle de Alcudia y Sierra Madrona. This brings depictions of local wildlife into the townscape, without requiring you to see the animals in person.

The Senda de la Plata also connects Alamillo’s landscape with its history. It runs along the western edge of the municipality on a route once used to transport mercury to Seville. This historic use helps put the trail in context; it does not describe a present-day function.

Cultural History and Notable Heritage

Housed in a restored traditional building, the Centro de Interpretación del Valle de Alcudia presents the valley’s fauna and flora. It also offers insights into ways of life such as livestock farming and sheep shearing. The exhibition includes a replica of the Estela Funeraria de Alamillo. If you plan to visit, check the current opening hours in advance.

Further traces of the past can be found at several locations. In the Sierra del Pajonal and at the Peñas del Burcio, rock shelters contain schematic rock paintings. The Estela de Alamillo itself is an exceptional Bronze Age funerary stele. These two subjects offer different ways to explore the archaeological heritage: the paintings in their rocky setting, and the stele as an individual relic from an ancient past.

The Iglesia Parroquial Purísima Concepción began as a small hermitage in the 17th century. It was later converted into a church by decree and dedicated to the Immaculate Conception in the early 18th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the building has a single-nave church and a bell tower. Features include a baptismal font and liturgical objects from the 18th century. The building’s history and its furnishings thus offer two distinct points of reference for exploring the church.

Another historic structure is the Puente de los Soldados, a railway bridge over the Alcudia River between the Chillón and Alamillo stations. It opened in the second half of the 19th century. Historically, the bridge is associated with Spain’s first major railway accident, which occurred in 1884.

Planning and Getting There

The second Feria de la Trashumancia in Alamillo was scheduled to feature discussion sessions, culinary workshops, regional dances, a communal meal, traditions, demonstrations, falconry and live music in 2025. This information relates to the program for that edition.

Alamillo can be reached via the CM-4202 and CR-P-4148 roads. Check current route conditions before travelling. If you plan to visit the Sala Interpretativa de Judas y Muñecas, it is also advisable to check in advance whether an appointment is required.
