Alcázar De San Juan combines a lagoon landscape with churches, museums and a windmill ensemble. It also offers wine tourism activities and Carnavalcázar during the Christmas season. For your stay, you can weigh these different themes according to your interests: nature, history, collections or seasonal offerings.

Lagoons and walking trails

The Complejo lagunar de Alcázar de San Juan consists of three lagoons: La Veguilla, Camino de Villafranca and Las Yeguas. It is included in the Reserva de la Biosfera de la Mancha Húmeda (UNESCO, 1981). The names of the lagoons give the landscape a clear structure.

From the interpretation centre of the Complejo lagunar, an educational trail leads to several observation points on the shores of La Veguilla lagoon. Check access regulations before your trip.

There are also walking areas at Cerro de San Antón, where you can explore the windmill ensemble on foot. This offers two different ways to get around: the educational trail to observation points on the lagoon shore and the walking areas around the windmill ensemble. Routes and access arrangements may be updated; check the information provided on site before your visit.

Churches, towers and museums

On 11 May 2026, the city reported that the museographic interpretation at Santa María La Mayor includes a route with 14 strategic points inside and outside the place of worship. Audio guides and QR codes provide an interpretive tour of significant spaces and features worth preserving. The interpretation plan may be expanded, and visitor arrangements may change.

The Torreón del Gran Prior is part of the Conjunto Palacial del Gran Prior and houses a museum space dedicated to the history of the Hospitallers of San Juan. A visit takes you through the inside of the tower and its historical displays up to the upper level. From there, you can look out over the old town.

The Museo Nacional Ferroviario displays a steam locomotive dating from 1864. The Museo Casa del Hidalgo focuses on the lifestyle of the hidalgos, who inspired Miguel de Cervantes when he created the character of Don Quijote de La Mancha. The museums thus have quite distinct themes: one centres on a railway exhibit, while the other explores a historical way of life connected to Cervantes’ literary character.

Visitor arrangements at Santa María La Mayor and the Torreón may change. The opening arrangements at the Museo Casa del Hidalgo may also change; check the relevant information before your visit.

Christmas celebrations and wine tourism

Carnavalcázar is celebrated during the Christmas season, from 25 to 28 December, and is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest. The programme and specific activities may vary. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Wine tourism in Alcázar de San Juan includes winery visits, tastings and workshops. The activities on offer depend on the season and the provider. If you are planning to take part, factor the relevant season and provider into your plans.
