Alcoba combines opportunities to observe nature, explore routes and experience local culture with Cabañeros National Park. Alcoba de los Montes is one of the municipalities in the national park; more than 17,000 hectares of the municipality’s territory are part of Cabañeros National Park. When planning your stay, you can focus on different things: wildlife and landscapes, a route on foot or by bike, or the history and traditions of the town. You can also take whichever of these interests you most into account when choosing a hotel in Alcoba.

Nature and wildlife around Alcoba

In the wider area around Alcoba is the wooden Observatorio de las cigüeñas (Stork Observatory). It is freely accessible and located about three kilometres from the Centro de Visitantes Casa Palillos. From there, you can see a colony of white storks; depending on the season, you may also spot deer, cranes and vultures. The observatory at the Centro de Visitantes Casa Palillos also offers a good view of the Raña. Depending on the season, you can observe groups of deer and other animals there.

Closer to Alcoba is a closed-basin lagoon. Several species of waterbirds breed there, and in winter the lagoon serves as a resting place for cranes. Another distinctive feature of the area is the Mesto de Santa Quiteria: a thousand-year-old hybrid of holm oak and cork oak, described as one of the largest trees in the province. The lagoon and the Mesto offer different natural attractions—seasonal birdlife on the one hand, and a single striking tree on the other.

Routes and excursion options

The Route de la Laguna Grande de Alcoba begins in Alcoba, is 7.5 kilometres long and can be travelled on foot or by bike. Another connection is the Ruta del Camino de la Atalaya, which links Alcoba with Santa Quiteria. Check the current trail conditions locally before setting out.

For a route with an archaeological destination, the trail to Castillo de los Moros begins at the Museo Etnográfico and ends at the archaeological site. The route is classified as moderate and takes about three hours. The Ruta de las 6 Fuentes starts in the centre of Alcoba and passes through natural landscapes and by natural springs. A guided 4x4 tour starts in Alcoba de los Montes and is intended for groups of at least six people. The options therefore differ in terms of transport, group size and the specific features of each route.

Museum, architecture and local traditions

The Museo Etnográfico de Alcoba displays traditional tools from the region, a replica hut used by shepherds and charcoal makers, a model of a charcoal kiln, and numerous agricultural implements. Alongside these insights into rural life, the museum provides information, maps and brochures about Cabañeros National Park. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The town’s architecture and history also offer different points of interest. The Iglesia de la Consolación in Alcoba is in the Gothic-Renaissance style; the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación has a 16th-century altarpiece. Castillo de los Moros is a prehistoric Bronze Age settlement dating back about 3,500 years. The archaeological site is known as Castellón.

Alcoba’s carnival features the characters Ahorcado and Maculillo. According to the regional account, this tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. The festival in honour of San Isidro takes place in the vicinity of Santa Quiteria from 13 to 15 May. The programme includes public festivities, a communal meal and folkloric performances; check the dates and programme again before travelling. During the celebrations for Santa Quiteria, locally made sobaos and aigas are also blessed and distributed to residents.

The municipality’s former silo houses the Centro Turístico Astronómico Singular y Planetario. Local attractions thus range from archaeological and religious buildings to astronomy and traditional festivals.
