Fernán Caballero combines a distinctive natural environment with walking trails, church architecture and festivals, offering clearly different reasons to visit. The Embalse de Gasset defines the area’s natural appeal, while the Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de Gracia and the triangular Plaza Mayor provide architectural highlights. You can plan your trip around a specific landscape, architecture or event theme.

Nature by the water and along the trails

The Embalse de Gasset is Fernán Caballero’s most important natural area and is also designated as a wildlife reserve. Kayak trips take place here, including year-round excursions organised by local businesses. Whether a particular tour is available depends on local providers and current conditions. If a kayak trip is part of your itinerary, check availability with the provider in advance.

The Sierra del Perro is home to one of the few cormorant colonies on the Iberian Peninsula. El Congosto is an area along the Bañuelos River known for its abundant water, even in drought years. These natural features offer different points of interest: the designated reserve at the Embalse, the cormorant colony in the Sierra and the abundance of water along the Bañuelos. You can also hike on public paths and livestock routes. Access and trail conditions may vary seasonally, so consider the time of year before planning a route.

Church and townscape

The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de Gracia dates from the 16th century. It has a single nave, two buttresses, an attached three-section tower, a bell tower and a modernist clock. A single-nave building has one main nave; this briefly describes the floor plan, while the buttresses and tower sections identify other specific architectural features. Visits are possible during Mass times. As the religious schedule may vary, check the current times before your visit.

Another architectural landmark is the Plaza Mayor, which has a triangular floor plan. While the church stands out for its date of construction and specific architectural features, the plaza is defined by its geometric shape. These offer two distinct ways of describing the townscape: through the architecture of a church building and through the layout of a square.

Festivals on different dates

The “fernanduco-style” bull run has a history of more than 150 years. It takes place on 30 August during the San Agustín festivities. The “Tradicional encierro al estilo fernanduco” was recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest on 24 August 2012. The tradition’s duration and the date of its recognition describe different aspects of the event. Check that year’s programme before travelling if you plan to attend the bull run.

The Romería de San Isidro takes place around 15 May and leads from the town to a hermitage on the summit of the Embalse de Gasset. It includes communal outdoor meals, a dance event, traditional games and fireworks; individual activities may vary from year to year. Check the current schedule if you would like to attend the romería. The two dates provide a clear comparison for planning your trip: the romería falls around mid-May, while the bull run takes place on 30 August. If you want one of the celebrations to determine your travel dates, plan around that year’s programme.
