Fuencaliente is located in the Parque Natural del Valle de Alcudia y Sierra Madrona. Rock paintings, archaeological sites and an astronomical viewpoint offer different focuses for planning your trip. Visiting conditions vary: six rock-painting sites are open to the public, a key must be collected to visit Valderrepisa, and astrotourism activities are offered during the summer months.

Rock Art and History

There are eleven rock-painting sites in Fuencaliente. Six have been developed for visitors and are open to the public. Cueva de la Batanera is an open-air rock shelter with schematic rock paintings dating from between the Chalcolithic and the Bronze Age. Peña Escrita also features schematic rock paintings and has been designated an archaeological zone since 1974.

The Centro de Interpretación del Arte Rupestre explores the history of the Fuencaliente area, which has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the historical significance of metal and mining. This connects the rock art with another theme in the area’s history: the long-standing use of metals and mineral resources.

The municipal area is also home to the Roman settlement and smelting centre of Valderrepisa, dating from the Republican period, or the 2nd to 1st century BC. To visit the Yacimiento romano de Valderrepisa, you must collect the key from the Oficina de Turismo in Fuencaliente. Take this step into account when planning your visit. Another historic stop is the Iglesia Parroquial Ntra. Sra. de los Baños: the church, which is open to visitors, dates from the 18th century and was built over a thermal spring.

Nature and Starry Skies

Its location in the Parque Natural del Valle de Alcudia y Sierra Madrona also gives your visit a nature-focused perspective. If you are interested in bats, the Microrreserva Refugios de Quirópteros has a specific access rule: the surrounding area is freely accessible, but the breeding sites may not be entered. As seasonal conditions or management rules may change, check the access rules again before your visit.

The Mirador Astronómico, on the way to the Monumento de Peña Escrita, offers the chance to observe the sky without light pollution. Fuencaliente is also a Starlight Destination and offers special astrotourism activities during the summer months. If stargazing is part of your travel plans, bear this seasonal focus in mind and check the dates for the summer in question in advance.

Local Cuisine and Trip Planning

Fuencaliente’s cuisine is based mainly on game dishes, including wild boar, deer and roe deer. Local mushrooms are often served with them. During Candelaria, residents and visitors gather around large bonfires, and a Migas competition is also held. When planning your trip, it is advisable to check the dates and the specific programme for the year in question.

If you are travelling by motorhome, you can use a local landmark for orientation: Fuencaliente’s motorhome service area is five kilometres towards Puertollano, next to the San Isidro recreation area. Check the details about facilities and capacity before you set off. If you are staying at a hotel, the seasonal astrotourism activities or the timing of Candelaria may influence your plans; the archaeological sites and rock art offer a different focus for your trip.
