La Solana: Zarzuela, Museum and Historic Architecture
Accommodation in La Solana
Get to know La Solana through Zarzuela, historic buildings and local traditions. The Plaza Mayor forms the city’s historic centre; other cultural highlights range from churches and a museum to culinary specialities and tourist routes.
Historic Centre and Buildings
The Plaza Mayor is recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural and forms the historic centre of La Solana. The square is open to the public and can be visited. It represents not only the protected character of the city centre, but also a place you can use as a starting point to explore the historic centre.
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is a Baroque building with Neoclassical tendencies and vaulted side chapels. It is the surviving part of a former Trinitarian convent: construction began in 1624, and the church was reconstructed in 1970. The Ermita de San Sebastián offers a different architectural reference point. It is considered La Solana’s oldest religious temple; its construction is dated to the 14th to 15th centuries, although no more precise date has been established. Its early Gothic structure and Mudejar roof, with polychrome inlay and mother-of-pearl decoration, make it distinctive.
The Sala Noble, also known as the Sala de Juntas, also has a striking ceiling: its Mudejar Par y Nudillo timber framework is richly decorated with geometric patterns. The Casa de la Encomienda was the seat of the Encomienda of La Solana. Its building history is reflected in an original tower of the Order of Santiago and a columned courtyard. The Palacio Don Diego was restored between 1990 and 1993 and converted into a cultural centre with an exhibition space, auditorium and training rooms.
At OrĂgenes de Santa Catalina, visitors can see the remains of the structure there through glass panels. Together with the buildings in the historic centre, this offers an archaeological perspective on the city’s history.
Zarzuela, Museum and City Routes
The annual Semana Nacional de la Zarzuela has been held in La Solana since 1984 and is recognised as a Fiesta de InterĂ©s TurĂstico Nacional. For a culturally focused stay, it is a distinct highlight alongside the city’s architectural history. Check the specific event dates for your travel period.
The Museo La Rosa del Azafrán presents the history and culture of La Solana through a tour connected to the urban fabric. Its six thematic sections are based on the structure of the Zarzuela La Rosa del Azafrán. The exhibition includes interactive audio content by the work’s author, models of Zarzuela stage sets and an interactive piano interface where visitors can play different pieces. Exhibition elements may change during future renovations.
The Rutas TurĂsticas por La Solana comprise various routes on which visitors can discover the city’s historical, gastronomic and artisanal heritage. La Solana is also located on the seventh section of the Ruta de Don Quijote. These offer two distinct points of reference for exploring the area’s cultural heritage.
Local Cuisine and Recurring Traditions
Traditional dishes from La Solana include Gachas, Pisto, Migas, Asadillo, Caldereta de cordero, Moje vendimiador and Potaje de Pascua. Viejas is also a local speciality sweet. The Dominican nuns prepare traditional sweets called Suspiros for special occasions or to order.
Religious traditions also shape the calendar year. The Ermita del Humilladero is the seat of the CofradĂa de la Virgen de Peñarroya; the Virgen de Peñarroya is the patron saint of La Solana. She visits the ermita twice a year: arriving on the second Saturday in September and departing on the Sunday after the feast day of Saint Anthony. If you would like to plan your trip around either of these dates, check the festival calendar for the relevant year.
Natural Areas and Protected Species
The Microrreserva de los Albardinales de Membrilla-La Solana lies between the municipal areas of Membrilla and La Solana and is open to visitors. In addition, the municipal area of La Solana is an area of importance for protected animal species such as the Spanish imperial eagle, cinereous vulture, black stork and Iberian lynx. This information refers to the municipal area and the protected status of these species there.
