Mestanza: Churches, Rock Art and Volcanic Landscapes
Accommodation in Mestanza
Mestanza lies at the foot of the Valle de Alcudia and Sierra Madrona Nature Park. Places of worship, rock art sites and volcanic landscapes sit alongside festival traditions and regional routes, offering a range of ways to plan your stay: architectural and rock art history, natural landscapes and geology, or local customs.
Churches, Inscriptions and Rock Art
The Iglesia de San Esteban Protomártir is a religious building dating from the 16th century that is open to visitors. Above the south portal is an inscription dated 1657, along with a stone coat of arms bearing the Cross of Calatrava. The church belongs to the Order of Calatrava. Alongside the building’s date, visitors can see an inscription, an order’s emblem and evidence of its affiliation with the order. Anyone interested in the history of religious buildings will find several distinct details in one place.
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua reflects a different timeline. This religious chapel, which is open to visitors, dates from the 20th century and houses a statue of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century. The head, hands and depiction of the Child were restored in the 18th century. The chapel’s construction date, the age of the statue and the restoration of specific parts are therefore separate aspects: the chapel and the statue are from different periods, and the restoration affected specifically identified elements.
Mestanza’s rock art sites include shelters with rock art concentrated in Collado del Pajonar, La Tabernera and the Callejones de RĂo FrĂo. These areas are designated as a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural (Site of Cultural Interest). Visitors are advised to go with experienced guides. Expert guidance is therefore an important part of planning if you want to explore these protected rock art areas.
Mestanza’s mining heritage includes the disused La Gitana mining complex. The Ruta de la MinerĂa (Mining Route) passes several sites in the Valle de Alcudia. The area’s mining heritage can thus be explored both at the named complex and along a route through various parts of the Valle.
Volcanic Landscapes and Regional Routes
The Ruta de los Volcanes (Volcano Route) passes through various volcanic landscapes in the municipality of Mestanza. The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn de los Volcanes del Valle de Alcudia (Valle de Alcudia Volcano Interpretation Centre) is part of the network of interpretation centres in Valle de Alcudia and Sierra Madrona. It focuses on the volcanoes of the Valle de Alcudia, particularly their geomorphology and defining features. The route passes through different landscapes, while the centre explores the forms and characteristics of the volcanoes.
When visiting the Laguna Volcánica de la Alberquilla (Alberquilla Volcanic Lagoon), visitors are advised to leave their vehicle somewhere it will not cause an obstruction and continue on foot. The surrounding area should also be respected. These instructions offer practical guidance for your visit: park considerately, continue on foot and take care of the natural environment.
Other route themes can also be explored separately. The Ruta de los Miradores (Viewpoint Route) features strategically located viewpoints overlooking the Valle de Alcudia and Sierra Madrona. The Ruta de la MinerĂa (Mining Route) passes several sites in the Valle de Alcudia, while the Ruta de la Trashumancia (Transhumance Route) runs through the Valle, following its dense network of livestock trails. These routes focus respectively on viewpoints, mining and livestock trails.
Festivals and Local Traditions
On Jueves Lardero, the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, people of all ages head to the countryside to enjoy hornazo, a pastry typical of the town. The Fiestas y RomerĂa de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua take place on 28 and 29 May. They include lamb stew, migas and religious processions carrying the statue of the Virgin. The Fiestas Patronales de San PantaleĂłn are celebrated from 24 to 29 July and are traditionally known for their encierros, or bull runs.
The recurring traditions differ by occasion and time of year: Jueves Lardero combines a trip to the countryside with hornazo; the May celebrations feature food and processions; and the July festivities are known for their bull runs. If a festival is the reason for your trip, the dates listed can help you plan around the relevant days.
