Montiel brings together archaeological traces, medieval architecture and religious traditions. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus on castles and churches, events in March or riverside trails.

Castles and Archaeological History

Castillo de la Estrella is a medieval landmark and is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It stands on a conical hill 961 meters high. The main access route leads from the road to Villanueva de la Fuente along an uphill path of about 500 meters to the upper platform. The route description makes the change in elevation a specific factor in planning your visit.

The history of the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella also dates back to the Middle Ages: it was built around the 1230s and excavated in 2013. More than fifty medieval burials were excavated around the church. The building and cemetery therefore belong to different chapters of the same archaeological site.

Castillo de San Polo is an archaeological site with prehistoric and medieval settlement. It lies two kilometers west of the center of Montiel. Around 1224, the Order of Santiago carried out medieval construction work there and used the castle against the Muslim garrison at Castillo de la Estrella, until it surrendered in 1227. Another memorial is the Monolito near Llano de la Fuente: it commemorates the siege and the death of Pedro I el Cruel in Montiel in 1369.

Churches, Facades and Religious Sites

Iglesia de San Sebastián Mártir stands in the old town and was built in 1440 in the Late Gothic style. Visits to the historic houses are limited to their facades: the private mansion Casa Pretel can be viewed from the outside; the facade of Casa de la Condesa de Calleja, built in 1898 and designed in the Eclectic style, can also be seen.

Outside Montiel, next to the municipal cemetery, stands Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de la Expiración. It is open to visitors; check the religious access arrangements locally. This takes into account the distinction when planning your visit between a visible building, a facade that can be viewed from the outside and a religious site for visitors.

Medieval Events in March

The Jornadas Medievales de Montiel take place every year over the weekend, from Friday to Sunday, closest to March 23. The event is held at Castillo de la Estrella. Montiel Medieval is also held every March and commemorates the death of Pedro I of Castile. The program includes historical reenactments, a market, music and family activities. Exact event dates may vary; check the dates before planning your trip around them.

Riverside Trail, Picnic Area and Local Wine Culture

The PR-CR 96 Sendero Entre Ermitas hiking trail follows a flat riverside stretch parallel to the Río Segurilla. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting out. At Ermita de la Virgen de los Mártires, a watercourse fed by the Río Segurilla supports fresh, lush vegetation and a picnic area with tables and chairs. Vegetation and outdoor facilities may vary seasonally.

For wine enthusiasts, Bodegas Real offers guided tours of its vineyards and facilities, as well as wine tastings by prior arrangement. Plan your visit in advance. Craftspeople in Montiel also specialize in stonework, ceramics and religious imagery. These themes add a look at local craft traditions to the churches and archaeological sites, without requiring a visit to any particular workshop.
