If you are looking for a hotel in Puebla De Don Rodrigo, the focus of your stay can be a good starting point: would you mainly like to explore trails and nature, learn about the history of the town, or experience a traditional festival?

Nature and landscapes around Puebla De Don Rodrigo

The Abedular de RiofrĂo is a relict birch forest in the municipality of Puebla de Don Rodrigo. Unusually for a birch forest, it lies at an altitude of just 630 metres and extends for about three kilometres along the FrĂo River. This brings together a distinctive stand of trees and a specific river landscape. The Roble Milenario shows another side of the local natural environment: it stands in the Garganta de los Membrillos, a section of the Valtriguero natural area, in a shady woodland of centuries-old oaks beside a pond. The tree is more than 30 metres tall and is estimated to be about 500 years old.

The landscape of the Bonales de la Puebla de Don Rodrigo is shaped by its terrain, too. The wetland is one of the most significant in the municipality and covers almost 65 hectares. A strong inflow of groundwater creates raised areas in the peat, forming the characteristic terrain. Access is from the N-430 towards Badajoz, along the same track that leads to the Arroyo de Valtriguero. Check local conditions before setting out.

Along the Camino Natural del Guadiana, the river offers close-up views of floating colonies of white water lilies (Nymphaea alba). Flowering may vary by season. Visitors interested in this river landscape will find a different natural feature here than in the birch forest or wetland: the water and water lilies shape the view.

Trails and hiking opportunities

The Ruta del Abedular de Riofrio – Ruta larga is a six-kilometre circular trail that takes two hours and is rated easy. It passes through the Riofrio pine forest to the start of the interpretive birch forest trail. Visits to the Abedular de Riofrío are regulated and require written permission in good time from the relevant Castilla-La Mancha agriculture and environment authority. Check this access requirement before visiting the birch forest.

Stage 15 of the Camino Natural del Guadiana begins on the outskirts of Puebla de Don Rodrigo and follows the river to the Refugio de Valhondillo. Check the current route conditions before setting out. Plaza Mayor is given as the starting point for the route to the Estrecho de las Hoces: from there, the route follows the Camino de Villarta along a paved road towards the gorge, running alongside the Guadiana River. The Mirador Castilnegro is on the summit of Monte Castilnegro and is often visited by hikers and cyclists.

Culture, festivals and local cuisine

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built in the 15th century and is considered the only monumental remnant of earlier periods in Puebla de Don Rodrigo. On the outskirts of the town is the Puente de Retama, an industrial architecture structure dating from the late 19th century. Both places offer insight into different periods of local history. Another destination is the waterfall at the Mirador Peñones del Chorro: it is more than 30 metres high and has a distinctive pool called “Pileta del Chorro”.

The festival calendar includes two dates in May. On May 15, San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers, is traditionally celebrated with a festival in the countryside and numerous activities. Santa Quiteria, the patron saint of Puebla de Don Rodrigo, is celebrated on May 22 and 23. The annual programme may vary; check the relevant festival dates and activities if you plan to visit for these occasions.

Typical dishes from Puebla de Don Rodrigo include fish stews, wild boar cold cuts, pickled quail, sopas berrendas, Caldereta and venison with lemon. Together with the nature trails, historic buildings and festival days, these offer different options for planning your trip. This does not specify restaurants or particular food offerings.
