Venta De Cárdenas lies at the start of the Despeñaperros passage towards Andalusia. The area can be explored especially through the history of travel and several specific cultural sites. Historic transport routes, preserved road remains and local traditions each offer a different focus. This allows you to explore the destination’s themes according to your interests.

Routes between Castile and Andalusia

From the 8th century until the end of the 18th century, the Camino Real del puerto del Muradal served as a route between Castile and Andalusia. This is a long period: for many centuries, the route shaped a historic way of travelling between the two regions. Remains of several sections of a Roman road have also been preserved around Venta De Cárdenas. Together, these offer different perspectives on the history of transport: the Camino Real represents a historically used route, while the Roman road remains are described as several preserved sections.

Cultural sites in the settlement area

The settlement area of Venta De Cárdenas includes Cueva del Retamoso and rock paintings. The Iberian sanctuary Santuario Íbero del Collado de los Jardines is also located in this settlement area. The cave and rock paintings offer a different point of interest from the sanctuary. Together, these sites complement the history of the routes with a distinct cultural focus.

Puente de Magaña and an outdoor picnic area

Puente de Magaña, in the area of Venta De Cárdenas, was designed by Eduardo Torroja. It can be visited free of charge and without fixed opening hours. For practical planning, it is a good idea to check visitor information before setting out, as these conditions may change. Another practical place to stop is Merendero Venta de Cárdenas: an outdoor picnic area with shaded spots. In a travel itinerary, the two serve different purposes: the bridge is a sightseeing destination, while the Merendero is a place to take a break.

Rest stops and local history

Historically, Venta De Cárdenas served as a rest stop for travellers on their way to Andalusia. The origin story begins with four families who had received land near the Magaña River; the settlement arose afterwards. A historical description of the venta depicts a three-nave inn with rooms for travellers, accommodation for horses and an area for carriages. The details show that the former rest stop accommodated people, animals and vehicles. Fuente de la Teja is thought to be the present-day counterpart of the historic spring near the venta.

Festivals throughout the year

Local traditions also offer points of reference throughout the year. The festival in honour of the Virgen del Camino takes place in September and includes a street procession, a popular festival and traditional games. The Romería in the Reconjo area, by contrast, takes place in May. The comparison helps with timing: the September festival combines several activities, while May is associated with the Romería. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance.
