Abánades combines local history with opportunities to spend time outdoors. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on historic sites, walks or the seasonal bathing area.

Getting There and the Museum

Abánades can be reached via the A-2, exit 118, and then the GU-928. As road conditions can change, we recommend checking the current situation before setting out.

The Museo Histórico de Abánades is housed in the village’s former school building and blacksmith’s workshop. Since May 2010, it has served as an interpretation centre for historic sites and the “Batalla Olvidada.” Most of the collection consists of items donated by residents of the village and the comarca, relating to the period of the Civil War in Abánades. The collection thus brings together historic sites and local history with objects from the village and the comarca.

Visits to the Museo Histórico Municipal de Abánades must be arranged in advance. Plan your museum visit accordingly. A tempera painting titled “Defensa de Sotodosos” is part of what is known as trench art and depicts the fighting in the municipality of Abánades. Check whether the work is currently on display before your visit.

Castle Ruins and Civil War Fortifications

The remains of an early medieval castle are located on Cerro del Castillo de Abánades. There is also a Civil War fortification with several trenches, firing galleries or loophole parapets, bunkers and shelters. The castle ruins and the fortification belong to different historical contexts, making Cerro an interesting destination for travellers wishing to explore more than one period of local history.

Some paths at Posición El Castillo have been restored, making it possible to walk the routes followed by soldiers during the war. As the condition of individual paths can change, take care when walking there. The “Abánades. La Batalla Olvidada” route also includes guided visits with specialist historians. Check the tour arrangements before your trip, as they may change.

Walks and Seasonal Swimming

Around Abánades, you can walk along farm tracks and across the parameras. Conditions on individual paths may vary, so assess the situation on site carefully. This allows you to complement a stay focused on history with time outdoors, without limiting your visit to a single attraction.

The natural bathing area known as “Pozas del Vadillo” is part of Parque del Agua and lies beside the village’s frontón. Untreated water cascades there from a waterfall fed by the Río Tajuña. Swimming is possible from 1 July to 1 September. As seasonal conditions can change, check the current situation on site before your visit.

Near Abánades, between the village and the dam, lies the Valle del Tajuña nature reserve in Torrecuadrada. It can be explored by bicycle, on foot or by car. These different options give your itinerary a clear focus: you can explore the historic sites or set aside time for walks and the seasonal bathing area.
