Alcoroches: Hiking, Forests and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Alcoroches
Alcoroches offers several practical points to help you plan your trip: forest landscapes, hiking routes, seasonal cycling options and local cuisine. If you are looking for a hotel, you can base your plans on the activities and your travel dates. For example, you can factor the several-hour Ruta de los Oficios and the seasonal e-bike rental into your plans.
Landscape and Wildlife
Scots pine dominates the pine forest area of Alcoroches. Beneath its canopy grow holm oaks, Pyrenean oaks, ferns and rockroses. Southwest of Alcoroches, there are areas dominated by juniper, creeping juniper, juniper shrubs, gorse, thyme and low-growing shrubs in general. The remaining oak forest is concentrated around Fuente de la Carrasca and its surroundings.
Wildlife is also part of the landscape: the presence of large mammals has increased considerably in the forests and fields. These include red deer, fallow deer and wild boar, which find peace, cover and food there. The habitats and plant communities mentioned here offer different features, from the pine forest and its undergrowth to the oak forest near Fuente de la Carrasca.
Hiking the Ruta de los Oficios
The Ruta de los Oficios is about 12 kilometres long and takes approximately two and a half to three hours. This gives you a rough idea of how much time to allow; check route conditions locally, as they may vary by season. The route follows the road to TraĂd. After leaving the village, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad lies along the route.
The Barranco de la Hoz is also on the Ruta de los Oficios. People visit it for walks, and it is sheltered from the north wind—a special feature on cold days. There is also a monument to the villages of the Mancomunidad de la Sierra in an oak forest along the route.
Cycling Options and Time Outdoors
The Alcoroches en Ruta initiative, launched by the Alcoroches Town Council, offers electric bike rentals and a roadbook in spring and summer. If you plan to use these options, it is best to confirm the season and availability before your trip. Through its Wikiloc profile, the initiative also offers outdoor routes for hiking, running, trekking and mountain biking. The routes are suitable for different fitness levels; activities may be subject to local conditions and regulations.
Fuente del Angosto is about two kilometres from Alcoroches, in a pine forest. The site has tables and other facilities for a day in nature. Seasonal rules on fires may change; check the current regulations before your visit.
Local Cuisine and Traditions
Alcoroches’ traditional mountain cuisine includes migas, gachas, garlic soup and potatoes. Another local dish is galianos, also known as hartatunos: an omelette whose main ingredients are potatoes and bread. Peppers and rabbit may also be added. Traditional festive pastries include mantecados, magdalenas, dormidos and tortas de anĂs.
During Currutaje, the entire village gathers in the Plaza Mayor. Each family brings bread, a table, chairs and an empty botija, and waits for beef and wine. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the programme for your travel dates.
