Almoguera brings together a medieval street layout, ecclesiastical heritage and festival traditions. The Camino Natural del Tajo adds a landscape perspective. If you are planning a trip to Almoguera, local history, festivals and the route described here can offer different points of focus.

Townscape and Historic Buildings

The townscape preserves a medieval layout: streets follow the slope, and traditional stone architecture defines the town. Individual buildings bring different chapters of this history to life. The Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de las Injurias lies southeast of Almoguera, on the site of the former settlement of Santa Cruz. It was built in 1518. Inside is an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece—two specific clues to the hermitage’s construction and furnishings.

The Iglesia parroquial de Santa Cecilia also brings together different historical features. The building dates from the 16th century and preserves a Romanesque baptismal font. Its tower was once a watchtower for the castle; a rocky passage connects it to the church building. Almoguera’s cemetery also contains the remains of a 12th-century Romanesque church. Only its broad, semicircular apse survives. These three sites offer different points of interest: an altarpiece inside a church, a baptismal font and a tower linked to the castle, and the sole surviving apse.

The remains of a castle of Arab origin were expanded by the Order of Calatrava and are now used as a park. The Casa de la Cultura is also part of the town’s history: in August 2025, the municipality described an exhibition there as permanent. The exhibition and documentary recalled days of destruction and solidarity.

Festival Traditions and When to Visit

The Fiesta de la Santa Cruz is celebrated in the first few days of May with several days of popular festivities; its tradition dates back to the 13th century. Festivities on the day of Cristo de las Injurias, the patron saint of Almoguera, include capeas, which take place from 14 September. These dates provide two specific reference points for planning a trip. If a festival is important to your travel dates, check the relevant dates in advance.

Camino Natural del Tajo and the Landscape

Stage 16 of the Camino Natural del Tajo connects Almoguera and Estremera and reaches the Tajo at the Embalse de Almoguera reservoir. Its first section runs through the protected area designated as LIC, ZEC and ZEPA, “Sierra de Altomira.” Both the route through the protected area and its connection to the Tajo specifically relate to this stage. Route details may change; check the latest route information before setting out.

The Almoguera area brings together the slopes of the Alcarria, olive groves and river floodplains. The municipality also includes Playa de Almoguera, the dam, the reservoir and the hydroelectric power station. These landscape features and named places add another perspective on Almoguera alongside its historic buildings. This makes it possible to plan around either an interest in local history or the stage and landscape, without assuming a particular route for your visit.
