Caspueñas: Hiking in the Valle del Río Ungría
Accommodation in Caspueñas
Caspueñas lies within the protected landscape area “Valle del Río Ungría”. Both the paths through the valley and specific points in the town center help visitors find their way around: the parish church on the main square, the covered washhouse and the park by the river. This makes it possible to combine a walking excursion with a look around the town itself.
Hiking trails around Caspueñas
The “Fuentes y Lavaderos del Ungría” circular route is 12.6 kilometers long. It connects Caspueñas on the valley floor with Valdeavellano and Atanzón on the slopes, before returning to Caspueñas. The loop can be started in town, making Caspueñas both the starting point and the place to return to. The circular route starts and ends in Caspueñas; Valdeavellano and Atanzón are the intermediate towns on the slopes.
The Caspueñas–Valdeavellano section is listed as 4.5 kilometers long. Compared with the 12.6-kilometer total length of the route, this figure gives the scale of one section; it does not apply to the entire route.
Another route that passes through Caspueñas is RCGU-39, which follows the signposted “Ruta del río Ungría”. The estimated duration of this route is around four to five hours; trail conditions may vary by season. These routes are therefore described in different ways: the “Fuentes y Lavaderos del Ungría” circular route is described by its total length and a section, while RCGU-39 is described by its estimated duration.
One of the hiking information boards for the Valle del Río Ungría is located in the center of Caspueñas. So, if you are exploring the valley’s trails, the town center is also a useful reference point for this hiking area.
Town center and river park
The parish church of Caspueñas stands on the main square and dates from 1624. Just beyond the main square is a covered washhouse behind a metal gate. The two locations are easy to distinguish when finding your way around the town center: the church is on the square, while the washhouse is just beyond it.
By the river is a shady public park with children’s swings and picnic tables. The park is also home to the Fuente de la Canaleja. The park is distinct from the church and washhouse as a landmark: it is by the water and has the facilities mentioned, while the other two are buildings on or just beyond the main square. Together, these provide specific reference points in both the center and by the river.
History and townscape
Caspueñas has been documented in historical records since the Middle Ages. This is a different time reference from the year 1624, when the parish church was built: the medieval record refers to the town, while 1624 refers to the church. Stone houses and traditional agricultural buildings have also been preserved in the town center. They broaden the picture of Caspueñas beyond a single building and provide additional architectural points of reference alongside the church.
If you choose Caspueñas for a stay, you can plan around a range of specific details that match your interests: the hiking routes are described by distance or estimated duration, while the church, washhouse, preserved buildings and river park each offer their own points of interest in town.
