Pareja appeals to travellers looking to combine historic buildings, local history and waterside scenery in a single stay. When searching for a hotel in Pareja, you can start by deciding what interests you most: architecture and local history, sweeping views or activities around the Embalse de Entrepeñas. The municipality offers different attractions for these interests, from the parish church and museum to the viewpoint and trails in the surrounding area.

Architecture and local history

The Iglesia Parroquial de Pareja is an imposing 16th-century building. It reflects the former power of the lords of Pareja, the bishops of Cuenca. Its layout is defined by three naves and ribbed vaults, giving a tangible impression of its architectural style. The church thus brings together architectural details and the town’s history of lordship.

The Museo de las Brujas de Pareja is housed in a renovated medieval tower. It offers extensive educational and historical material on the Inquisition trial in Pareja. The museum’s location and historical subject give this visit a different focus from ecclesiastical architecture. Other traces of the town’s history include sections of the area that was once enclosed by walls. The Plaza Mayor also shapes the townscape: it is one of the most interesting urban ensembles in La Alcarria. The Eremitorio de Pareja is carved into a sandstone outcrop, adding a special connection to the landscape to these varied historical impressions.

Views and waterside activities

The Mirador de Castilviejo offers panoramic views of Pareja. The outlook varies by direction: to the south, you can see the Vega of the Río Ompólveda and the trails to Casasana and Tabladillo. To the west, the view takes in the Embalse de Entrepeñas, the Pareja dam and the town centre. The viewpoint therefore offers views of both the surrounding area and the town itself.

At the Azud de Pareja, there is a launch area for non-motorised water sports and a three-kilometre path with urban furniture. The hiking trails in the surrounding area are separate: they lead through hills and Mediterranean vegetation, with panoramic views of the reservoir. At the Embalse de Entrepeñas, Pareja offers a wide range of opportunities for water-based activities. If you are planning a particular activity, check the relevant conditions in advance, as providers and conditions may vary.

Festivals and trip planning

On Easter Sunday, Pareja holds the Santo Encuentro procession and the Quema del Judas. The celebrations feature Garnacha, a drink typical of Pareja, and rosquillas made in Pareja. Food and drink arrangements and other programme details may vary from year to year. So if you would like to plan your trip around the celebrations, check the dates and the programme for that year.

The route described for the journey follows the N-320 towards Cuenca; after SacedĂłn, take the turn-off for the N-204. Check road conditions before setting off. When choosing a hotel in Pareja, it helps to first decide what you want from your stay: would you like to focus on architectural and historical highlights, experience the Easter celebrations or set aside time for views and waterside activities? These different priorities make it easier to match your travel dates to your interests.
