Uceda: Architectural History, Río Jarama Routes and Festivals
Accommodation in Uceda
Uceda combines architectural history with a natural landscape where you can go hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and enjoy water sports. The annual calendar also offers specific points to help plan your trip: alongside the churches and historic buildings, it includes the municipality’s festivals. This lets you decide whether to visit Uceda primarily for its architecture, the routes along the Río Jarama or a particular event date.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The Iglesia de Santa María de la Varga was built over a former mosque and completed in the first quarter of the 13th century. Since 1999, it has been recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category; it is located beside the ruins of the Castillo de Uceda. Its surviving features include two funnel-shaped portals, three apses, and decorated capitals and corbels. These details range from the design of the entrances and apses to the craftsmanship of individual architectural elements. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
The Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Varga offers a different architectural impression. The neoclassical church dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its single-nave interior and elaborate stucco decoration are among its defining features. Together with the older Iglesia de Santa María de la Varga, it makes Uceda’s different architectural styles and periods a subject for exploration in their own right.
The Cartuja also offers a glimpse into other uses of a historic building. Its interesting cellar has brick barrel vaults; today, the Cartuja serves as the town hall and as a rural guesthouse. Fragments of walls and several Mudéjar-style arches survive from the Convento de San Francisco. Part of the former water supply channel can still be visited. Check local visiting conditions before including this section in your plans.
Landscape and Routes Along the Río Jarama
Uceda’s natural landscape receives water from the upper Río Jarama. Poplars, elms, ash trees and willows shape the scenery along the river. Activities mentioned include hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and water sports. This gives you a choice of different ways to get active; which ones are suitable for your stay also depends on the conditions of the routes and the area. Check these before setting out, especially if you are planning a route or water sports.
One route starts at the Iglesia de Santa María de la Varga, leads to the Balcón de la Sopeña viewpoint and follows a medieval path down to the river. Another begins at the Plaza Mayor and leads to a viewpoint with panoramic views over the Jarama Valley. Both descriptions mention a viewpoint, but have different focuses: one starts at the church and follows the medieval path, while the other offers views over the valley.
Another route from the Plaza Mayor crosses the river to the former Fábrica de Harinas in the Comunidad de Madrid. In the 19th century, the building supplied electricity to the surrounding towns and now hosts various events. Another path follows the Río Jarama to a Granja escuela and continues to a small weir with a suspension bridge. Route and access conditions can change; check the current situation in advance.
Plan Your Visit Around Festivals and Transport
The Belén Viviente de Uceda, performed by Uceda’s residents, is recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest. It takes place on the weekend closest to 25 December; performance dates vary from year to year. The Fiestas de Uceda in honour of the Virgen de la Varga take place from 14 to 17 August, although exact dates in future calendars may vary. If a festival is important to your trip, check the dates for the relevant year before making plans.
