Avinyó can be explored through a range of interests: Romanesque architectural history, sites commemorating the Carlist Wars, a route to the parish church of Sant Miquel de Terradelles and wine tourism experiences. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Avinyó, these themes offer different starting points for planning. The places and experiences described range from buildings in the town to Celler Abadal in Santa Maria d’Horta d’Avinyó.

Romanesque architectural history

Avinyó has several Romanesque buildings, most of which were later altered and supplemented with elements of newer architectural styles. Parts of the Romanesque nave walls have been preserved at Sant Joan d’Avinyó; the three apses were reconstructed in the 20th century. In 1232, a church called Sant Joan was built and reconsecrated in Avinyó. These details offer different insights into its architectural history, covering both a specific historical date and later structural changes.

Memorial sites and historic buildings

The Torre dels Soldats was part of Catalonia’s optical telegraph network, built by the liberal army during the Second Carlist War, also known as the Guerra dels Matiners. At the Fira dels Matiners, historical reenactments are staged in the streets of Avinyó, explaining the reasons for the Matiners uprising and the events in Avinyó at the time. The history of the uprising is thus encountered both in connection with the telegraph network and through the Fira’s reenactments.

Features of La Torre de l’Abadal include a round, crenellated tower, as well as decorative mosaics and stained glass. Cal Verdaguer is a masia protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL). Both buildings add further specific aspects of local architecture to the Romanesque heritage.

Bridge, route and interactive activities

Pont Vell crosses the Riera de Relat. The Avinyó–Sant Miquel de Terradelles–Avinyó route starts in the town of Avinyó and leads to the parish church of Sant Miquel de Terradelles. It is located in the municipality of Santa Maria de Merlès, in the Berguedà comarca. Font de la Rovirassa is also along this route. This provides a named starting point, destination and another point along the route.

El Juego del Geoparque offers interactive routes in Avinyó that can be accessed using a mobile device. Participants solve puzzles and identify rocks, cultural heritage and landscapes. While the Avinyó–Sant Miquel de Terradelles–Avinyó route leads to the named parish church, El Juego involves puzzles and identification activities. The two experiences therefore have different focuses.

Wine tourism experiences

At Celler Abadal in Santa Maria d’Horta d’Avinyó, wine, landscape and gastronomy are at the heart of its wine tourism experiences. One specific experience is called “Visita Vi&Formatge”: Abadal wines are paired with cheese. The vineyards stretch across small plots and terraces surrounded by Mediterranean woodland. “Visita Vi&Formatge” focuses specifically on wine and cheese; the wine tourism experiences as a whole also include landscape and gastronomy.
