Balsareny offers several ways to shape your stay: architectural and church history, paths and landscapes along the Séquia de Manresa, and the Festa dels Traginers. When planning, consider whether you would like to focus mainly on historic architecture, a particular route or the festival.

Castle and Churches

Castell de Balsareny is a Gothic civil palace from the 14th century, arranged around a central courtyard. From the battlements, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Llobregat River, Balsareny, Montserrat and the Pyrenees. The castle’s architecture and the views of the landscape offer two distinct perspectives on the town.

The parish church of Santa Maria, known in Catalan as Església Parroquial de Santa Maria, was first mentioned in 1009. It was built according to Romanesque design principles towards the end of the 13th century and extensively remodeled in the 16th and 17th centuries. The first mention and the later construction and remodeling history provide distinct points of reference in time. Sant Esteve de la Colònia Soldevila also offers insight into several construction phases: the Romanesque church is documented in 1038. Parts of the original nave and the central apse area have survived despite later Neo-Romanesque additions.

At Sant Ramon de Sobirana de Ferrans, an unusual layout defines the building: two completely independent naves are connected by a single arch. This arrangement is considered exceptional in Catalonia and beyond. Sant Vicenç de Ladernet, by contrast, is a church in ruins. Much of its structure and interior have survived; it is located in a wooded setting on the left bank of the Riera de Conangle.

Other heritage sites include La Torreta del Castell, a small fortification on the slope of the castle hill, probably built in connection with the Carlist Wars of the 19th century, and the Forn d'obra de les Collades. This brick kiln stands out for its cylindrical shape, while most brick kilns are square. The Pintures del Casal Verge de Montserrat are murals by Josep Obiols in the small chapel of the Casal Verge de Montserrat.

The Séquia and Routes

The Séquia de Manresa begins at the Resclosa dels Manresans below the hill of Castell de Balsareny. After about 600 meters, it emerges from underground in an area characterized by riparian woodland. Its regional course passes through the municipalities of Balsareny, Sallent, Santpedor and Sant Fruitós de Bages before reaching Parc de l’Agulla in Manresa.

Two routes offer different highlights. The Camí Ral runs from Balsareny Town Hall to Cal Joanic, following the old royal road. Els Origens de la Séquia (Balsareny) leads downhill from the castle to the Resclosa dels Manresans and then follows the Séquia back. A geological and mining-history route focuses on the municipality’s mining heritage. For a different kind of trip, there is the long mountain biking route along the Séquia: it is 46.8 kilometers long and extends into the municipality of Balsareny. These details distinguish the routes by their course, theme and—in the case of the mountain biking route—length, without suggesting that they offer the same experience.

Visitor Activity and the Festa dels Traginers

The “Visita al castell de Balsareny” activity is aimed at families and adults. It includes the courtyard, the weapons room and the grand rooms, as well as the kitchen and dining room, the Baron’s room, the Tinell Hall and the cellar. If you plan to take part, check the dates in advance.

The Festa dels Traginers takes place every year on the Sunday of Sexagesima, that is, the Sunday before Carnival; the date shifts from year to year accordingly. The Torrada del Traginer is served early in the morning. In the morning, the market, tavern and carter’s provisions shop open. As the festival program may vary, it is worth checking the date and current program details before your trip.
