The municipality of Bellprat is crossed by the Serra de Queralt. Routes, Castell de Queralt and several churches offer concrete starting points for discovering the local landscape and architectural history. The history of the “Bellprat, Vila del Llibre” book festival is also among the municipality’s cultural themes.

Hiking trails and landscape

The GR 172 long-distance trail begins in Bellprat and ends in La Mussara. Along its route, it follows the Serra de Miralles-Queralt and passes through its landscapes and areas of natural value. This identifies both endpoints and the trail’s connection to the mountain range.

Another route runs from Bellprat to Castell de Queralt; it starts and ends at Bellprat Town Hall. The GR 7-2 CamĂ de Bellprat, in turn, passes by the castle before entering the municipality of Santa Maria de Miralles. The route information therefore gives different reference points: the endpoints for the GR 172, the town hall as the start and finish for the route to the castle, and the passage by the castle and subsequent entry into the municipality of Santa Maria de Miralles for the GR 7-2.

When comparing these trails, use the respective landmarks described: the long-distance trail and its endpoints for the GR 172, the town hall and castle for the route to Castell de Queralt, and the GR 7-2’s onward route towards Santa Maria de Miralles. These details do not include walking times or difficulty ratings.

Castell de Queralt and its history

Large sections of the circuit wall and walls of the residential area remain at Castell de Queralt. Traces also point to a cistern and stables. These different architectural elements draw attention not only to the enclosure but also to the living and supply areas within the complex.

The historical references to Castell de Queralt can be traced indirectly back to the rule of Count Guifré, between 880 and 897. In 976, Count Borrell II and his wife Ledgarda sold the castle to Guitard, Viscount of Barcelona. Castell de Queralt stood on the frontier of the Marca against Spain. The early indirect link and the specifically dated sale thus represent two different historical reference points.

Churches and architectural details

Sant Jaume de Queralt is a Romanesque church dating from the first half of the 11th century. Its single-nave interior is covered by a barrel vault. On the exterior, Lombard pilaster strips and blind arcades decorate the building. A barrel vault is a longitudinal form of vaulting; pilaster strips and blind arcades divide the exterior with vertical bands and arches without openings.

Sant Esteve dels Ferriols has a rectangular floor plan, a single nave and a shed roof. The south portal has a round arch made of voussoirs, with no decoration. The inscriptions known as inscultures are located directly in front of the entrance to the Romanesque church. Architectural features of the church and archaeological traces are therefore found close together at this site.

The present-day building of the parish church of Sant Salvador de Bellprat dates from 1641. Together with the Romanesque church of Sant Jaume de Queralt, dating from the first half of the 11th century, this gives a different chronological context. The three churches can thus be distinguished by specific architectural features and dates, rather than being grouped together as general attractions.

Book culture in Bellprat

The “Bellprat, Vila del Llibre” festival was established in 2008 as an initiative of the Associació d’Amics de Bellprat. Across nine editions, there were six second-hand bookshops on the ground floors of houses, a used-book market and contributions from fifty independent publishers from Catalonia, Aragon, the País Valencià and Andorra. These historical festival formats brought together a local initiative, second-hand bookshops, used books and publishers from several regions. Alongside the architectural heritage of the castle and churches, they provide Bellprat’s cultural history with a distinctive connection to the book trade.
