Discover Caldes d'Estrac
Accommodation in Caldes d'Estrac
Caldes d'Estrac brings together thermal waters, coastal architecture, art and historic buildings. When planning your trip, you can consider which of these aspects of the town particularly interests you: its thermal heritage, cultural venues or history by the sea.
Thermal Waters and Culture
The current thermal baths building dates from 1818 and is publicly owned. The thermal water emerges at a temperature of 37.9 to 38.8 °C and is described as mesothermal, moderately mineralised and hypotonic. The town's thermal heritage can therefore be understood both through the history of the building and the stated properties of the water.
Another cultural highlight is the Fundació Palau. It opened as a cultural institution in May 2003 to make publicly accessible the collection of paintings and sculptures belonging to Josep Palau i Fabre, as well as his private library. The collection includes around fifty works of Catalan painting from different generations of 20th-century artists. Works by Picasso are displayed on the second floor; as the exhibition may change, check before your visit.
Historic Centre and Buildings
Carrer Major and Plaça de Sant Antoni form the oldest historic centre; Plaça de Sant Antoni was formerly called Plaça de la Constitució. At the end of Carrer Major, where it meets Carretera de Sant Vicenç, you can see a partially preserved circular lime kiln. Its internal diameter is 3.40 metres and it is 4.50 metres high. The kiln dates from the 17th century and was decommissioned during that century.
The towers also offer clues to the town's building history. Torre de Can Busquets is first documented in historical records on 25 February 1586; an olive tree stands atop its crenellated crown. Torre Verda, also known as Torre de la Guàrdia, is a round early modern defensive tower. It was built in the early 16th century to protect the Maresme coast from raids by Saracen pirates.
Parc Joan Maragall is dedicated to the poet Joan Maragall; the park contains a restored bust in his memory. Together with Fundació Palau and the historic buildings, it reveals a cultural side of Caldes d'Estrac that goes beyond the coastal landscape.
Coast, Park and Activities
Passeig dels Anglesos runs along the sea and is lined with houses featuring Mediterranean, neoclassical and Noucentista elements. Anyone interested in architecture will find these three named styles in a specific stretch of the coast. Playa dels Tres Micos has been awarded the Blue Flag every year since 2009.
During the summer season, amphibious beach chairs are available as a special bathing aid at Platja dels Tres Micos, by the Red Cross station. They are intended for people with reduced mobility who need assistance getting into and out of the water. As seasonal services and booking procedures may change, check the current arrangements before your visit.
Parc Muntanyà has a sea-view pergola where cultural and social events take place; the programme may vary. A guided route through the park offers insights into its vegetation and extent, as well as views of the town and its surroundings. The availability of guided routes may change, so ask locally. On the beach at Caldes d'Estrac, the Associació de Pescadors, Afeccionats i Usuaris de la Varada d'Embarcacions organises sailing, paddle surfing and windsurfing courses. Courses and organisers may vary by season.
Festivals and Getting There
The Festa Major is associated with the feast day of the patron saint, Verge del Remei, on 8 September, and includes several events, among them a Correfoc through part of the town. Dates, route and programme may vary from year to year; check the details for the relevant year when planning your visit. Caldes d'Estrac is accessible via the C-32 motorway and by train on the R1 Rodalies line. Check current transport connections before travelling.
When choosing a hotel, you can start by weighing up whether thermal waters, art and architectural history, or coastal architecture will be the main focus of your trip. The sights and activities offer different themes to choose from; for specific visits, check the seasonal conditions and current information.
