Discover Canovelles: Old Town, Routes and History
Accommodation in Canovelles
If you’re looking for a hotel in Canovelles, you can plan your stay around different interests: local history, routes through the municipality, or the Sunday market. Canovelles combines an Old Town of medieval origins with archaeological sites and a range of routes through its rural areas. The places and topics below offer practical starting points for planning your trip.
Old Town and Església de Sant Fèlix
The Església de Sant Fèlix is one of the few buildings in Catalonia in the style of the First Romanesque. It is located in the Old Town on Carrer de l’Església, a very narrow pedestrian street. Visiting the church therefore also takes you into an area with medieval origins. An elevated, peaceful spot in the Old Town offers views of the Canovelles countryside and the nearby towns of Les Franqueses del Vallès and Granollers. The church, street layout and viewpoint each represent a different aspect of the historic center.
Archaeological traces and the Domus d’Olivet
The Ca l’Estrada 2 site shows that this area of Canovelles was inhabited during various periods, from the Neolithic to the present day. Documented findings include hearths, four round huts with stone floors, and a burial area set slightly apart by a paleochannel. Four individual pit graves with grave goods were found there; a statue menhir is also among the finds. The remains of dwellings and burials reveal the different types of evidence found at this archaeological site.
The Domus d’Olivet is also part of the town’s history. It probably dates from the late 10th or early 11th century. Initially, it served to defend and control the area at a crossroads; later, it became a fortified house. Its development is therefore quite different from the archaeological findings at Ca l’Estrada 2, offering another perspective on Canovelles’ history.
Routes through the town center and rural areas
The three “Passejades per descobrir Canovelles” routes cross the municipality, linking farmhouses, fields, woods and notable areas of the town center. One is called “Nucli antic de Canovelles, Can Cuana i veïnat de Sanaüja”. It starts at Ronda Nord, passes through the Old Town and by the Font de Can Duran, then continues to the hamlet of Can Cuana and through the rural part of the municipality.
This route offers views of the cliffs of Sant Miquel del Fai, Montseny and the Congost plain. It also gives you a glimpse of Canovelles’ rural landscape. So when getting your bearings, the town center is not the only point of interest: the routes described also take in farmhouses, fields and woods within the municipality.
Sunday market and rail connections
The Sunday market takes place year-round, every Sunday, on Passeig de la Ribera. It is located on the stretch between the Guardia Civil barracks and the municipal boundary with Les Franqueses del Vallès. The market’s Sunday schedule is a helpful detail to bear in mind when planning your visit.
For rail travel, Granollers-Canovelles station is a useful point of reference: it is served by the R3 Rodalies line between l’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Puigcerdà . Check the timetable for your travel date. This way, you can consider local history, the routes and the weekly market as different highlights of your stay in Canovelles.
