Capolat combines a distinctive landscape of high plateaus with historic churches, the history of its castle and various ways to experience the surrounding area. Three high plateaus at different elevations define the area; the Serra dels Tossals connects them. The landscape, architectural history and routes each have their own appeal. You can therefore explore Capolat with the focus that matters most to your trip: its striking elevations, medieval buildings or a specific cycling route.

High Plateaus and Elevation Differences

Steep slopes shape the terrain along the southeastern municipal boundary, which lies around 200 metres above the plains of Berga and Avià. In the region, the three high plateaus are popularly known as “les tres maries”. The Taravil plateaus lie between 1,300 and 1,500 metres and dominate the plain of l'Espunyola and Montmajor. Together, these figures illustrate two different points of reference for elevation: the position of the southeastern boundary above the plains and the elevation range of Taravil. The Serra dels Tossals connects the three high plateaus.

Churches and Historical Traces

The churches offer different points of reference for exploring the past. Sant MartĂ de Coforb is first mentioned in 839 and preserves a large part of its medieval walls. Sant Serni de Terrers is documented from the Middle Ages; a large part of its northern wall from that period survives. The present building of Sant QuintĂ de Taravil appears to date entirely from the 18th century. Inside is a Baroque or Neoclassical altarpiece.

Sant Andreu de la Serreta is a small Romanesque church. The layout of the nave may date from the 10th century. On the west side, it has a solid-looking bell gable with two openings. Taken together, the evidence ranges from a possible 10th-century layout and surviving medieval walls to a building that appears to date entirely from the 18th century.

Capolat Castle is first explicitly mentioned in 1065. The ruins of the Santuari dels Tossals lie at 1,455 metres and form a viewpoint.

Walking and Cycling Destinations

A section of the GR1 long-distance trail passes through the municipality of Capolat. The Serra dels Tossals can also be explored on a circular route with outstanding views and a natural setting. The “Pantans i turons” route is signposted with yellow markers from the Berguedà trail network; check local trail conditions before setting out.

The Salt de Sallent waterfall lies on the boundary between Capolat and l'Espunyola and has a drop of approximately 35 metres. Access is difficult. For cyclists, the climb to Port de Mal Pas de Capolat is another option: it is 5.1 kilometres long with an elevation gain of 444 metres. On the climb, the road passes through large rock walls at the BalcĂł de Santa Aina. Route conditions may change.
