Fonollosa can be explored through a range of themes: the fortified and church complex of Torres de Fals, other religious buildings, distinctive landscapes and marked routes. Wine visits and local festivals also provide concrete ideas for planning a trip. You can choose whether your stay focuses more on architectural history, nature or a guided activity.

Torres de Fals: Towers and Visitor Programme

The monumental Torres de Fals complex comprises the towers of the former Castle of Fals, the church of Sant Vicenç de Fals with its rectory, and the cemetery. Two towers remain from the fortified complex: one is 19 metres high and the other 17 metres. The visitor programme combines a guided tour of the complex’s exterior with a visit to the church’s museum-style interior. It also includes an audiovisual presentation about Engonça’s will.

Guided tours take place on the third Sunday of each month at 10 am and 11:30 am. Places are limited, and advance booking is required. Check the dates and booking arrangements before travelling. This lets you plan this activity in advance rather than relying on being able to visit spontaneously.

Churches from Different Building Periods

Santa Maria del Grau de Fals combines a 12th-century Romanesque nave with a pre-Romanesque atrium. The church stands beside Mas Grauet on a small rise and overlooks the plain of Fals. Its period and location make it a different architectural landmark from Sant Vicenç de Fals in the Torres de Fals complex.

Sant Andreu de Comallonga also reveals several phases of construction and alteration. The chapel lies near Mas Sant Andreu in the north of the municipality of Fonollosa, bordering Sant Mateu de Bages. The Gothic section defines the building; fragments of the walls are all that remain of the earlier Romanesque structure. Today’s Santa Creu de Fonollosa, in turn, is an almost Neoclassical new building, erected around the 17th century to replace an older, probably Romanesque temple that had been demolished. These differences help show that the religious buildings do not all belong to the same period.

Landscape and Marked Routes

Roques del Diable is an elevated limestone platform between the Torrent de Bacardit or Torrent de Camps and the Torrent de Fonollosa. Fields lie below the formation. Karst erosion has shaped the surface with numerous holes, tracks and hollows; some formations resemble footprints, faces or feet. The site is signposted, although vegetation currently limits visibility. Check the visibility on site if you plan to include the formation in your itinerary.

Connecting Fonollosa, Camps and the Torres de Fals, the Camí de les Tres Esglésies runs through Raval del Perejutge. There are also marked circular routes for walking and BTT, or mountain biking. These routes make it easy to follow the local tracks and paths. Another scenic landmark is the Alzina centenària del Mas Querol: this monumental holm oak in Fonollosa has been designated a monumental tree by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Its trunk circumference at the base is 5.64 metres.

Wine and Festivals

At the Jaumandreu estate in Fonollosa, Celler Més que Paraules produces wines under the Denominació d’Origen Catalunya designation. Visits to the farmhouse, winery and vineyards, as well as guided tastings led by a winemaker, are available by appointment. Arrange your visit in advance.

The Pessebre Vivent del Bages began in 1977 in Fals and is now held every Christmas. Around sixteen performances are planned, with approximately 260 participants; check the dates before travelling. The Aplec del Grau programme features the traditional Ball de l’Almorratxa, Ball de Cascavells and Corrandes de Fals, followed by Sardana music. The events therefore differ both in the time of year they take place and in their cultural focus.
