Gallifa: Rocky Landscapes, Panoramas and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Gallifa
Gallifa is a rugged municipality consisting mainly of a valley between the cliffs of Sant Sadurní and Mount Farell. The cliffs mark the western end of the Cingles de Bertí. This landscape shapes the character of the town: rock formations, ridgelines and historic buildings are at the heart of the travel experience.
Rocky Landscapes and Sweeping Views
The protected natural area of Gallifa forms a large rocky massif representative of the limestone coastal foothills. Erosion of sandstone and conglomerate has created cliffs with rounded boulders. Despite the municipality’s small size, its biodiversity is remarkable: rocky habitats and lush Mediterranean vegetation provide homes for a variety of species. Notable cliff-nesting birds of prey found in Gallifa include the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo).
The Mirador de la Guineu is next to the Sant Sadurní hermitage. From there, the view extends across the Pre-Pyrenees, Moià, Centelles and Puigsagordi, Sant Feliu de Codines, the Vallès, La Mola de Sant Llorenç del Munt and Montserrat. The hermitage itself also offers sweeping views across much of the region, from the high mountains to the sea. It stands at an altitude of 951 m at the highest and most rugged point of Mount Sant Sadurní.
Gallifa Castle and Churches
Gallifa Castle is documented from the year 999 and originally belonged to the House of Barcelona. Today, only sections of the walls that enclosed the summit remain; the chapel of Santa Maria and the remains of other buildings are located there. A route leads to the castle entrance and the Santa Maria del Castell hermitage. This Romanesque hermitage was documented in 1060.
The churches also reflect different periods in the town’s history. Mare de Déu del Grau is a 13th-century church with a rectangular single-nave layout and a semicircular apse. The parish church of Sant Pere i Sant Feliu is a Romanesque, single-nave building with a stone barrel vault and a roof of Arabic tiles. It was first documented in 1060 and consecrated between 1140 and 1180, when Bernat de Rocafort was lord of Gallifa. The Santa Maria del Castell hermitage is also Romanesque and has been documented since 1060.
Since its restoration in 1986, the Church of the Virgin Mary of Ecology has been dedicated to this devotion and houses the Gallifa Ecological Sanctuary. At Sant Sadurní, in addition to the hermitage, the castle’s dimensions are noteworthy: its stone wall was around 70 cm thick on average and reached a height of up to 2 m in some places. The Sant Sadurní chapel is a single-nave building with an apse.
Trails, Visits and Ceramics
Hiking and mountain-biking routes connect Gallifa with Castellar del Vallès and Caldes de Montbui. A circular hiking route goes around Sant Sadurní de Gallifa, and another route leads to Gallifa Castle’s entrance and the Santa Maria del Castell hermitage. If you plan to take one of these routes, check the current route and conditions before setting out.
The Fundació Josep Llorens Artigas offers guided visits to its workshops, traditional wood-fired kilns, 18th-century farmhouse and exhibition space. Make sure to book in advance. The Fundació Artigas is also home to Estudi YAMA, a ceramics workshop for anyone looking to get started with ceramics or explore their creativity through hands-on work. If you plan to take part in a specific activity, confirm the current course arrangements in advance.
There is an area suitable for games and picnics at the Mare de Déu del Grau hermitage. Before your visit, check locally whether the area can be used as intended.
