L'espunyola: Hotels for Culture and History
Accommodation in L'espunyola
In L'espunyola, the landscape is shaped by woodland, historic buildings and paths through named areas. Castell de l'Espunyola, several chapels and churches, and a megalithic tomb offer different ways to explore the area during a stay focused on culture and history. The routes also vary considerably: from a route divided into three sections to a trail with a stated distance and elevation gain.
Woodland and protected area
A large part of l'Espunyola is covered by woodland, including pine, holm oak and oak forests. Part of the area also lies within the Natura 2000 site and the Site of Community Importance ES5130029 Serres de Queralt i Els Tossals-Aigua d'Ora. Woodland and cultural heritage therefore represent two distinct aspects of the destination: alongside specific buildings and historic places, there is an extensive landscape shaped by different types of forest.
Castell de l'Espunyola
The first specific documentary mention of Castell de l'Espunyola dates to 950. The complex comprises several buildings and two towers. The main tower at the southern end served as a residence and is dated to around the 13th century. Part of the enclosure wall, the large portal on the eastern side and the remains of the former church of Sant Climent del Castell have survived. The year 950 refers to the first specific mention, not the construction date of the present complex; the dating of the main tower should be considered separately.
An asphalt track leads to the castle from kilometre 139 of the C-26 and is just over three kilometres long. This route information makes it easy to plan the drive. On the Ruta-Joc del Castell de l'Espunyola, hidden QR codes, questions and riddles form the stops in a playful exploration of the castle's history: those who solve the tasks gain access to a story about its past.
Chapels, churches and historic details
The Capella de la Marededéu del Bosc is a small, rectangular, single-nave chapel without an apse. The year 1861 is engraved on its monolithic door lintel. It is located near kilometre 132.5 of the C-26, directly beside the road. The megalithic tomb Bressol de la Mare de Déu del Bosc is on the road from Berga to Cardona, about 25 metres north of the chapel. The two locations can therefore be identified by reference to the chapel and the road.
EsglĂ©sia Sant SadurnĂ del Cint has been documented since the 10th century. Its side and west walls date from an earlier construction phase; the apse and side chapels belong to a later period. A 12th-century date is possible for Parròquia Santa Margarida del Mercadal o del Cint. It follows a simple model that is common in the region. This tentative dating differs from the unequivocally documented mention of Sant SadurnĂ.
Sant Climent de l'Espunyola houses a polychrome wooden carving of Saints Cosmas and Damian. It comes from the former church of Sants Metges. Sant Salvador de Mata, in turn, retains part of its opus-spicatum paving despite alterations and its complete deterioration. These examples show different forms of cultural heritage: surviving architectural elements, a door detail dated to a later period, a preserved figure and a remnant of paving in a ruin.
Routes by distance and mode of travel
The main route of the Ruta ramadera is 32 kilometres long and divided into three sections: l'Espunyola–Avià , Avià –Olvan and Olvan–Sagà s. The route can be completed on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. Its stages and stated modes of travel distinguish it from the Els Tossals Trail, for which a shorter distance and an elevation gain are given.
The Els Tossals Trail takes place every year in November. It covers about 14 kilometres and around 700 metres of elevation gain, favouring paths and cross-country sections. The Ruta ramadera and the trail therefore differ both in their stated distances and in the way they are described. The CamĂ de l'Espunyola a la Vall d'Ora (ICR10), by contrast, is described in terms of points along its route: it passes through the El Cint area and near Sant SadurnĂ.
Event in l'Espunyola
