Monistrol De Calders lies in a mountainous landscape of streams and ridges. Pine forests, holm oak forests and scrubland cover three quarters of the municipality. More than 30 springs rise at various points; below the village, three streams converge to form the Calders River. Water, rock and ridgelines shape the scenery to consider when planning your trip.

Streams, Rocks and Views

Els Gorgs Blaus is a gorge carved by the Riera de la Golarda stream into a band of bluish conglomerate rock. The landscape includes a cliff about 40 metres high and water-shaped pools where the current swirls. East of Monistrol De Calders lies Gorg de Saladic, where the Riera de Sant Joan crosses broad rock slabs. Both places showcase different geological formations shaped by the municipality’s streams.

Parc Municipal El Serrat offers views of Monistrol De Calders and the Riera de Sant Joan. You can also take in the landscape from a viewpoint, with a view that is not limited to individual gorges or rock formations. Those interested in the area’s nature can also explore its connection to water through the more than 30 springs and the confluence of the three streams that form the Calders.

Church, Lintels and Early History

The church of Sant Feliu de Monistrol de Calders has been documented since 1105; the present building dates mainly from the 18th century. The Cal Marfà estate has five inscribed or engraved lintels, including the oldest inscription in the town centre, dated 1615. The engraved tool motifs on lintels also tell of former trades, identifying the occupations of the people who once lived in the respective houses. The lintel at Ca l'Estudiant depicts a master mason’s tools.

The small 18th-century Capella de Sant Pere Màrtir is included in Catalonia’s Architectural Heritage Inventory. It stands on a ridge and offers views of Monistrol De Calders and the Pla de Bages plain. Another glimpse into the past awaits at the monument at Pla de Trullàs: this simple-chamber megalith dates to approximately the Bronze Age, between 2000 and 1500 BC, and was restored in 2005. Codro Bressol is a large boulder that broke away from the upper cliff. An anthropomorphic tomb from the early Middle Ages has been carved into it.

Walking Routes and Specific Destinations

The GR-177 long-distance trail passes through Monistrol de Calders and leads to Pla de TrullĂ s, where you can visit the dolmen and the viewpoint. The full route is 109 kilometres long and starts in MoiĂ . A different option is the quiet local circular route Ruta de la Font de l'Estiraguers, Font del Collet i Parc del Serrat, which passes through Monistrol de Calders, by the meander below the village, the Font de Ca l'Estiraguers and Font del Collet springs, and through Parc del Serrat. The Ruta de la Pedra Seca, meanwhile, introduces an old building technique: dry-stone construction uses stones laid without mortar or other binding material, creating architecture that blends into its surroundings.

The municipality provides a map of eight walking routes that pass by most of the notable places in the area. Check whether the map is available before your trip. The viewpoint at Pla de TrullĂ s can be reached via the path from Granera or from the area around the Masia del SolĂ  settlement; from there, the view extends to La Mola, the Pyrenees and across the Vall de MarfĂ . The path to Capella de Sant Pere MĂ rtir is a separate route; its final section is still well paved. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.
