When planning a stay in Sallent, it helps to distinguish between cultural and nature-focused experiences. Romanesque and Gothic architecture, an Iberian settlement, local festivals, and routes with different landscape and historical highlights shape the options. You can decide in advance whether you would like to get to know Sallent mainly through its buildings and traditions or through archaeological sites and routes.

Romanesque architecture, bridges and local traditions

The monumental complex of Castell i església de Sant Esteve i Sant Sebastià de Sallent stands on Turó del Castell. From there, you can see across the Pla de Bages and the Llobregat Valley. The complex’s Romanesque church is one of the few Romanesque churches in Catalonia with a circular floor plan. This distinctive architectural feature gives the building a unique place among Sallent’s historic sights.

The Pont del Batlle Pere Otger is also part of the town’s architectural heritage. The Gothic bridge was built in the 14th century and is known as Pont Vell; it is considered a symbol of Sallent. The Centre d'interpretació i Casa Museu Torres Amat, a former family residence beside the Llobregat River, offers another perspective on local history. Its luxurious rooms illustrate the power of the Catalan bourgeoisie. Tours, tastings and small-scale concerts take place there. As programs may change, it is advisable to check the dates before your trip.

Two festivals with distinct characters are among Sallent’s lively traditions. Enramades is a Corpus Christi celebration with medieval roots, during which the streets are decorated. It is recognised as a Festa Tradicional d’Interès Nacional. Festa Major takes place annually on the first and second weekends of September; the program may change. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the current dates in advance.

Iberian heritage and routes through Sallent

The Poblat ibèric del Cogulló is a fortified Iberian settlement covering about 5,000 square metres. It is recognised as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN) and is part of the Ruta dels Ibers. From the hill where the settlement is located, you can see across the Pla de Bages, the Llobregat Valley and the Pyrenees. Visits are only available as part of scheduled tours or workshops. Therefore, check before visiting whether a suitable program is planned.

Six self-guided routes through nature and cultural heritage are offered in Sallent; the availability of individual routes may change. The Camí de la Sèquia runs for a total of 26 kilometres alongside a 14th-century canal that carries water from the Llobregat River in Balsareny to Manresa. Its section through the municipality of Sallent includes several aqueducts and passes through dry farmland and wooded areas. At Cogulló, the archaeological settlement and its expansive views are the main attractions. These different highlights can help you choose a route based on your interests; it is worth checking the current range of routes when planning.

Geology, nature and wine tradition

The Centre de Visitants del Geoparc de la Catalunya Central is an information centre about the geopark. Information panels, a small mineral collection and an audiovisual presentation explain its geology. In the wider Sallent tourism area, the Llobregat River forms the Aiguamolls de la Corbatera wetlands at Cabrianes. Their diverse habitats include riparian woodland, pine forests, remnants of an oak forest, red marl slopes, sandy areas and gravel banks, as well as extensive stands of reeds and bulrushes.

Celler Sanmartí, the only winery in the DO Pla de Bages in Sallent, offers another trace of the region’s history. It preserves a historic wine cellar at Mas Sanmartí. The old family residence has been documented since 1210. This wine tradition adds another historical focus to the archaeological and architectural themes, without implying that a specific tour is offered at the site.
