When planning a trip to Sant Jaume de Frontanyà, two clear focuses stand out: hiking and architectural history. The routes provide practical guidance for planning, while churches, a distinctive fountain and different architectural styles bring the history of the village and its surroundings to life. You can give these themes separate emphasis or include both in your travel plans.

Hiking trails and different route lengths

A cultural heritage entry registered in 2022 lists the PR-C51 as a 9.130-kilometre circular hiking trail in the centre of the municipality. The trail is part of the network of hiking paths homologated, signposted and maintained by the FEEC. The route type is also a useful planning detail: the PR-C51 is described as a circular trail. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

The GR-241 long-distance trail crosses Sant Jaume de Frontanyà from southeast to northwest and passes through the village centre. The cultural heritage entry registered in 2022 also describes it as a 59.46-kilometre circular route around the Catllaràs massif, divided into four stages. The route passes through Borredà, Vilada, La Nou de Berguedà, Castell de l’Areny and Sant Jaume de Frontanyà. Its length and division into stages clearly distinguish this multi-stage circular route from the shorter PR-C51.

Three drovers’ roads are also designated in Sant Jaume de Frontanyà. Walking and hiking are permitted on drovers’ roads in addition to livestock movements, which take priority. This is an important condition to bear in mind when planning and does not guarantee access to any particular route.

The landscape around Sant Jaume de Frontanyà

The eastern slope of the Serra del Catllaràs lies west of the village centre, with its focal point near Creu Melosa. The steep cliff of Les Forques shapes the landscape around Sant Jaume de Frontanyà and reaches a height of 1,210 metres. The Riera del Molí drains the municipality’s central slopes, adding a hydrological dimension to these geographical landmarks.

A cultural heritage entry registered in 2022 describes the Serra del Catllaràs as an area with diverse flora and fauna. Scots pine forests shape the landscape; at higher elevations there are also stands of black pine and beech forests with boxwood. The area is also home to more than 30 orchid species and deer. Together with the distinctive cliff, these features create a landscape that can be described through specific geological and natural characteristics.

Churches, architecture and special places

The Església romànica de Sant Jaume de Frontanyà dates from the 11th century and is an example of Lombard Romanesque architecture in Catalonia. At the intersection of the nave and transept is a twelve-sided ciborium tower, described as unique in Catalonia. Its age, architectural style and distinctive form offer several specific points of reference for understanding the building’s architecture.

The Església Vella de Sant Jaume de Frontanyà was the municipality’s first parish church. In 905, Bishop Antigis of La Seu d’Urgell consecrated it in honour of the apostle Sant Jaume. Remains of the eastern wall survive; there may also be remains of an adjoining cemetery. The path to the Església Vella follows the Camí de Faig i Branca, just beyond the Collet de Creu Melosa. Access is considered difficult and should be taken into account when planning.

Sant Esteve de Tubau offers a different architectural style: the pre-Romanesque church has a single east-facing nave and a trapezoidal apse set slightly off the main axis. The Santuari de la Mare de Déu dels Oms is a building erected in 1785 over a small Romanesque structure dating from the 13th century. Both examples add distinct architectural and historical points of reference to the Romanesque parish church.

There is also a distinctive architectural feature in the village centre: the Font de la Mola, next to the church, is made from a millstone. Its construction makes it a particularly distinctive place in the village centre.

Include events in your plans

The Santuari de la Mare de Déu dels Oms is associated with the Aplec del Dilluns de Pasqua Florida. If you would like to include the gathering in your travel plans, check the event date in advance.

A cultural heritage entry registered in 2022 describes the Trobada de Santjaumesos as a gathering usually held on the first Saturday in September. The programme described included a communal meal, a concert and dancing. Check the event dates when planning a current trip.
