Sant Feliu de Llobregat: Roses, Architectural Heritage and Trails
Accommodation in Sant Feliu de Llobregat
Sant Feliu de Llobregat can be explored through a range of themes: rose culture, buildings spanning several centuries and trails in the Collserola area. The places and routes below each offer a distinct focus—from putting a rose collection in context to exploring the history of a factory colony.
Roses and landscape
The Roserar de Dot i de Camprubí comprises 420 rose varieties. This number may change as plantings are renewed. Labels and explanatory information identify the different sections and collections; the signage may be updated. This lets you explore the collection by its clearly marked sections, rather than viewing its variety of roses as a single, uniform garden.
The Paratge de la Salut is characterised by pine and holm oak forests, with a few other oaks. The trees now cover areas where carob, olive and almond trees were once cultivated. This contrast illustrates how land use has changed: today’s woodland also includes land that was previously used for agriculture.
Architectural history and heritage
Palau Falguera and its surrounding gardens date back to the 17th century. The chapel of Ermita La Salut was built over a medieval hermitage and consecrated in 1749. Ermita La Salut is a private religious building dating from the 17th century. It is located in the area around the Riera de la Salut, next to Masia de la Salut.
Two Modernist buildings can also be compared by date: Casa Josep Aguadé, now the Sindicat Agrícola, was built in 1911 by municipal architect Gabriel Borrell i Cardona. The Cases de Joan Batllori were built in 1914, three years later, by architect Melcior Viñals on behalf of Joan Batllori. Their different dates and patrons give each building its own historical context.
The Ruta Modernista de Sant Feliu de Llobregat is a cultural trail through buildings and places that form part of the city’s Modernist heritage. The Route de Can Bertrand has a different historical focus: it allows visitors to explore on foot the spaces and features of the factory colony, established in 1861, and trace its development. The two routes therefore offer different perspectives—Modernist architecture on one hand, and the history of a factory colony on the other.
The sculptural ensemble Matèria Gris is also part of the city’s artistic heritage. It was created by the artist Lluís Sans from Sant Feliu de Llobregat and is located in the gardens. The grounds of Can Ferriol contain 11 wine-growing huts of various types, three of which have been restored. The different hut types and their restoration status offer concrete points of reference if you are interested in the built traces of wine growing.
Trails in the Collserola area
The proposal for themed trails in the Collserola area of Sant Feliu includes two circular routes starting at the Àrea de lleure de la Salut, as well as a third loop trail. The Collserola routes follow tracks, paths and trails and are suitable for walkers, hikers and cyclists. Surface conditions may vary, and route conditions may also change, so check them before setting out. The routes include viewpoints for panoramic views of the landscape and birdwatching.
When choosing a route, several aspects are therefore relevant: the proposed circular route options, the paths described as suitable for several user groups, and viewpoints for taking in the landscape or watching birds. If you are particularly interested in industrial heritage, the Route de Can Bertrand offers a different focus from the trails in the Collserola area. It leads visitors to features of the factory colony and lets them trace its development on foot.
A local rose tradition
The Exposició Nacional de Roses was founded in 1927 by rose grower Pere Dot from Sant Feliu de Llobregat. It is one of the city’s oldest, most deeply rooted and most distinctive traditions. Roses are therefore connected not only with the collection at the Roserar, but also with a tradition embedded in the city’s history. Programme details vary by edition; if you are planning a visit, check the information for the specific edition.
