Sant Juliá De Vilatorta combines opportunities for hiking with a rich architectural and cultural history. If you are looking for a hotel, the things that interest you locally can help you choose your destination: historic architecture, the tradition of the Caramelles del Roser, or trails through a variety of landscapes. The options range from a flat loop through the town centre to hikes with a clear focus on nature or history.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes

The section of the GR-2 La Jonquera–Aiguafreda between Sant Julià de Vilatorta and Sant Llorenç del Munt starts at the Parc de les Set Fonts recreation area. The self-guided section of the GR 151 Camins del Bisbe i Abat Oliba, from Sant Julià de Vilatorta to Folgueroles, also starts there. Both routes are connected to the recreation area, but head in different directions.

Another circular route passes through the former Pla de la Quintana airfield. It is 9 km long, flat and well signposted. Along the way are significant remains of the airfield that was in operation during the Spanish Civil War, including several shelters, a hangar and a powder magazine. The route is suitable for families, combining a walk with insights into the history of the site.

The path to the Font de la Riera, by contrast, is described as an easy out-and-back hike. It passes through two distinctly different natural environments: along a long, sunny ridge and through shaded stretches beside the stream. For a walk around the town, there is also a flat 3 km loop that passes notable buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as buildings in the Modernisme, Historicist and Noucentisme styles. Another short, pleasant circular path links hydrological points of interest and illustrates traditional ways of collecting and storing water. The routes thus differ both in their format and in their themes.

Caramelles and Historic Buildings

The Caramelles del Roser originated in Sant Julià de Vilatorta, in the context of the Confraria del Roser, founded in 1590. The tradition has been maintained every year without interruption ever since. Its features include singing the Goigs del Roser, traditional clothing and locally composed songs. At the Casa de les Caramelles, on the ground floor of ca l’Anglada, an interpretation centre and an audiovisual presentation are devoted to the tradition. An exhibition room displays important elements of the festival, including the Bordons, Cistella and Estendard. Check the visiting arrangements before your visit.

The parish church, Església parroquial de Sant Julià de Vilatorta, also tells the story of several building phases: its pre-Romanesque predecessor dates from around 905, while the present church dates from around 1050. The bell tower, the lower part of the apse and the parapet of the central nave remain from the building erected in the 11th century. The monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt stands on a rock at the highest point of the municipality. Its Romanesque church retains a central apse and two smaller side apses.

The Sant Llorenç del Munt area and its natural surroundings are considered an area of special ecological and landscape interest under the PEPMEN, the special plan for the protection and improvement of Guilleries-Savassona. The Guilleries-Savassona Natural Area Information Centre is also located in Parc de les Set Fonts. It provides information about the natural area, the Osona comarca and Sant Julià de Vilatorta; check the current visiting and service information before your visit. The park also has its own history: water has always flowed there, the place was formerly called Font Noguera, and Miquel Pallàs redesigned the park in 1933.
