Sant Vicenç de Castellet between the Llobregat and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Sant Vicenç de Castellet
Sant Vicenç de Castellet brings together the Llobregat, walking and circular routes, and a rich cultural heritage. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you decide whether you would most like to explore the town through its riverside landscape, its trails, or its history.
The Llobregat and routes in the municipality
The Llobregat runs through Sant Vicenç de Castellet from north to south, forming an ecological link. A restored stretch of the left bank offers opportunities for walks and nature watching just a few metres from the town centre. Sant Vicenç de Castellet is also part of the Catalunya Central UNESCO Global Geopark, established in 2011.
The signposted SL-C53 is an approximately two-hour circular walk through the eastern part of the municipality, in Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac Natural Park. Its points of interest include the church of Sant Pere de Vallhonesta. Also in the east, the Ruta dels Gronxadors Panoràmics de Montserrat circular route offers views of Montserrat.
The SL-C61 passes the inn, farmhouse, and hermitage of Sant Jaume de Vallhonesta. It begins and ends on Camí de Vallhonesta at PQ 1+160. For urban circular routes, choose the signposted Ruta Blava, Ruta Lila, and Ruta Vermella, which are described as very easy.
Town history and cultural heritage
Castellet Castle is considered the origin of Sant Vicenç de Castellet and gave its name to the municipality and town. The chapel of Nostra Senyora de Castellet was built beside the castle in the 11th century; in the 17th century, it became a Marian shrine. The original castle tower dates back to the 9th or 10th century. The Castellet complex also includes a large rectangular hall with diaphragm arches and four rooms to its west, where parts of the original floor have been preserved.
Local stoneworking is also part of the town’s history. The hard limestone can be polished to give it a marble-like finish. It quickly became popular and was known as “Pedra Sant Vicenç.” Some of the first industrial businesses in Sant Vicenç de Castellet were companies that harnessed the water power of the Llobregat. The monument to Anselm Clavé adds to the town’s Modernist heritage: it was inaugurated as a public fountain on 2 May 1920.
Two urban walking routes offer their own perspectives: “Comerços en la memòria” uses QR codes to help visitors discover former shops and businesses that left a lasting mark on the town. “Art, pedra i patrimoni” connects Pedra de Sant Vicenç with important monuments and buildings in Sant Vicenç de Castellet.
Festivals and local traditions
The Fira del Vapor recreates everyday life in Sant Vicenç de Castellet in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the railway and textile factories were powered by steam. The festival features historical street scenes, crafts from the period, a food and handicrafts market, dancing, and dance workshops. Check the event dates before your trip.
The Aplec de Vallhonesta, also known as the Festa del Panellet, is held every year on 1 May at the Romanesque hermitage of Sant Pere de Vallhonesta. If this date is important for your trip, check it before making plans. The Ball de Gitanes combines dance and performance and is held at Pasqua Granada, also known as Segona Pasqua. The tradition dates back to 1907; the form practised today originated in 1992. The Ballada begins with a procession of dancers through the streets to Plaça de l’Ajuntament. During the final Galop, the various groups invite relatives and friends to join in.
