Súria: Medieval History, Mining Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Súria
Súria offers travelers several distinct points of interest: medieval history, the legacy of mining, and nature and landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel in Súria, these themes can shape the focus of your stay. Historic sites, festival traditions and trails offer different perspectives on the town.
History and Mining
Castell de Súria is documented as far back as 992. A knowledgeable guide takes visitors on the “Descobrint el Passat” tour through the medieval castle and Poble Vell de Súria. If you plan to take this tour, check its availability in advance. Poble Vell offers views of Súria and the Cardener River. The tour thus combines a medieval structure with views of the town and river.
Colònia Santa Maria offers a different historical focus. From 1918, the Belgian Solvay group built it as a workers’ settlement for employees of the potash mine and their families. Its origins place the settlement within the labor history of mining and the lives of the people it was built for.
The Museu de la Mineria Interpretation Center also explores the subject of mining. It is the starting point for visits to significant sites in the history of mining in Súria and the rest of the municipality. The center is located in the Cal Sivila del Lloc building, known as the Casinet, and is accessed through the Cal Balaguer del Porxo tourist office. Check current visiting arrangements before you travel.
Only small visible remnants of Portal de Manresa remain today; the portal itself has been completely destroyed. The Fira Medieval d’Oficis offers numerous participatory activities. Its first edition took place in November 2002, and the program includes workshops and street performances featuring dances, storytelling, singing, minstrels and knights. The Caramelles de Súria are also part of the town’s cultural history. They have been documented since the 16th century and have been listed in Catalonia’s Catalogue of Festive Heritage since June 2016.
Landscape, Geology and Trails
At 613 meters, Puig de Sanç is the highest mountain in Súria. It offers views of Bages and the neighboring counties. Pla de Reguant provides a different natural highlight: it is one of the most significant riparian forests in Central Catalonia and has great natural diversity. Here, the focus is on the riparian forest and its diversity, while Puig de Sanç is described in terms of elevation and views.
Falla de Migmón adds a geological perspective: this spectacular fold has become one of Súria’s symbols. For travelers interested in the landscape, the high point, riparian forest and geological fold each offer a distinct subject to explore.
The routes offer further points of interest. The Ruta-joc de Les Guixeres passes through gypsum quarries and kilns and offers views of the Les Guixeres area on the shaded slope of Serra del Puig de Sants. The El Camí del Cable route ends at Casa de la Fàbrica Vella in Súria. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
